FFH on police duty

LASooner posted some nice NYPD FFH pictures in the different thread since it's an interesting topic I'm starting a new thread for comments.

The Chicago PD are using them also. I spoke to an officer that had one assigned to him, and he was not given any instruction on how to operate it, so he had no idea what the mileage numbers were. I'll bet his braking and acceleration scores were pretty low. He liked the car's handling and comfort, but thought it a bit slow off the line. He did say that he could only get it to 105 mph, so im guessing they are pretty standard models. These FFH's will get a years worth of our kind of use every month in police service, I would love to hear how they are standing up to the (ab)use. The CPD ones were unmarked, had internal LED police flashers and were being used for escort duty when I was involved with them. I'll post a video of the escort when I figure out how to do it, they look pretty cool lit up at night!

In NYC, many city vehicles are hybrids. Most Fords are pre 13.

 

When the plug-in Prius first came out,

One was being towed on a hook across town.

That's really neat!! In Minneapolis the city has bought quite a few Prii for use as city inspector's vehicles and the like. Back when I had an intership at Metro Transit back in 2007 while in college they had a few Honda Civic Hybrids. The traffic cops here used to have Escape Hybrids back when they first came out but later on they were replaced with gasoline Escapes as the old hybrds wore out. I'm surprised to see a hybrid in police duty as I imagine it would be a little slow for pursuits and with a limited top speed. Perhaps for Park Police or traffic cops though... The Minneapolis Mayor is a hybrid fan. When he first took office in 2001 he selected a Gen I Prius as his official vehicle that the city pays for. A few years later upgraded to a Gen II Prius. A few more years later and he had it converted to a plug-in by one of those conversion places. In 2010 he switched to a first gen Ford Fusion Hybrid which he still has. He has decided not to run for reelection this fall so the 2010 FFH is his final city owned car.

Powerful police cars encourage high speed chases which are dangerous. Radio waves travel 186,000 miles per second. 105 mph ought to be fast enough for anyone. We had a Crown Vic cream an 86 year old lady in her Camry. He was going 86 mph in a 30 mph zone responding to a call that had already been cancelled over the radio. She survived and he got canned.
