guess I don't know how to drive a hybrid yet

Just hold down the OK button while on any regular screen like Engage or Empower

Thanks, I know it seems silly, but it isn't labeled....

No, you misunderstand, I meant the owner's manual didn't make that clear, at least to me, that there were 5 different averages it keeps, current trip, trip 1, trip 2, life time, and engage.

That applies to a lot of the manual. I got so tired of it saying "refer to page 84". The index is helpful one out of five times. I hope they improve it for the 2014 model.

Sorry I was already wondering why yours wouldn't have the OK on the center button! Looks like you are all set now?

I learned something from acdii because his trip 2 picture did show avg MPG and gallons used but mine didn't. You have to enable the enhanced mode for trip 2 in order to show additional data.

So as I'm driving the mpg that shows is for lifetime?..How do I get the mpg just for that trip?..I have to go to trip 1 or 2 before leaving. the house.and reset it each time? or does it automatically display each trip mpg at the end of each trip when u stop?..sorry for all the newbie questions:)

No, the MPG that shows up as you are driving, is not lifetime. This MPG is called Avg MPG. It can easily be reset from any of the empower/engage screens by holding the OK button. I regularly do this before starting a trip to see the average as the trip progresses.

Lifetime Avg is shown at the end of a trip. It can also be reset thru a different menu.

In summary, there are three averages the car keeps for you.

Avg MPG - which is easily reset and I use for daily averages, or weekend averages or daily commutes. i reset this regularly as it gives me good feedback n a trip.

Lifetime MPG - which I have reset a couple of times, but really is intended to track you long term MPG average.

Trip 1 and 2 - which can be used for tank average and keeping track of different segments of a long trip.

The whole average thing can be confusing, and I think even some long time owners, have not figured it all out. It took me a while before I realized Avg MPG and Lifetime MPG are completely different.

I don't really mind there being 5 versions of the truth, I mean I can sort of understand, but it needs to be clearly documented in the manual.

The killer is the lifetime has a menu item where as the "Avg" does not.

The MPG shown when you're in Engage, Empower, Enlighten & Inform is the same MPG shown when you go to Fuel Economy and pull up the bar graph showing your past 30 minutes, 10 minutes or 5 minutes of fuel economy. The MPG number shown on ALL those screens is reset by pressing and holding the left OK button until it resets while you are looking at ANY of those screens

As Hybridbear mentioned, the avg MPG can be reset very easily from many screens.

Unlike the other averages, there are no elapsed time or number of miles associated with this average. It is just there to use for whatever you want to measure. For instance, when I go to run errands with several stops, I reset the average at the beginning. After I get home, I get to see the average for all my errands (usually not great).

Also, I frequently reset it before starting on my commute to work, and watch it work its way up as I approach work, at the end of the trip it matches the trip summary, as long as I reset it as soon as I start the car.

This Avg MPG is visible from many screens so it is very useful and easy to use.

I fully agree the manual does a horrible job explaining the averages and their uses.

I understand now where I can reset things, thanks to earlier comments in this thread.

The issue for me is more of a design rather than education. On all the rest of the menu based MPG averages, you hold OK to reset. That's fine and consistent. But all of the other MPG averages you can reset have a menu item dedicated to them (with the exception of the current trip which you cannot reset anyways). The design is inconsistent at that point. So instead of being blindingly obvious, education is needed. That is the point I was trying to raise.

I'll probably go through all the menus on my SE at some point and put together a full map here as well as what button does what. I think it is a little different than the HyTi.

This makes so much sense! Thanks for explaining it so that even I can understand :-p

As I approached my home last night after resetting my Lifetime Average for the first time, I discovered why you don't want to do this too often: you lose all the EV+ memory. Now I have to wait for my FFH to learn my three most frequent destinations all over again.

Just cycle the key a few times, then it will learn it much quicker.
