Spoiled by EV mode

I've had my car only a month, but I've already come to sort of dread the ICE turning on. The noise is unpleasant, and I absolutely hate seeing the instantaneous mileage drop to 15 while it tries to propel the car and charge the battery.

EV mode, on the other hand, is like piloting a sailplane through clouds. Very seriously, if I'd know how pleasant this experience would be, I'd have opted for an Energi Titanium even if it did cost $8,000 more. The thought of driving in EV for 30 miles is tantalizing enough to make me start planning on trading in my HyTi in a few years.

I agree it's really nice to drive EV mode only and as much as possible. I try to keep the ICE noise as brief as possible driving thru town; however I'm OK with it on the interstate.

I agree. I love driving in the city and seeing 70+% EV miles. It is annoying to hear the ICE come on. Passengers love the quiet too.

 

Everytime I hear the ICE kick on, I go all Jeremy Clarkson.

That's too funny. I kind of do that too. Once the ICE kicks on I step on the gas a bit harder so I can reach my cruising speed and get it to shut off. Top Gear is hilarious!

You will get so used to the ICE turning off that when you get into a normal car, you will come to a stop and wonder, "Why is the engine still running?" Oh RIGHT, that s a GOOD thing! LOL

The sound of the ICE in the Fusion Hybrid is one of the most annoying things about the car. It's extremely noisy, and not in a good way.

It sounds like it's overexerting itself.

That's why Ford engineers incorporated the sound canceling system. The Atkinson cycle is known for its additional noise. I think I've only heard the ICE run once while I was not in my FFH. We've gotten spoiled with EV. The sound of the ICE inside the car isn't that bad.

If you think ICE is loud in 2013 FFH, try the 2011 FFH, Ford has made great progress with noise abatement in two years, thanks,,, Even though I have wrong shifter issue, crackling noise and Battery saver Off issue, still happy with vehicle, currently getting 45+ mpg overall...

The ICE in the 2013 FFH does not sound exactly like my 2010 FFH, but when my wife had a 2006 Escape Hybrid, the low-pitch pained grumbly groan sounds very similar to what the 2013 FFH makes now.

Nope, she drives the Energi now, nice and quiet! And even when the ICE runs on her car it seems quieter than my SE Hybrid... so I guess maybe it's me that's the grumbly groaner...

That's why I'm thinking of some big noisy dual exhausts! Cover up the noise of that ICE!! Has anyone else been shocked by the size and location of the muffler gigantus all across the back of the car? Really, did it have to be so massive? I'm thinking it must have special characteristics due to the engine, but can't think of why it has to be the size of a baseball team's bat bag?

I think that the reason that the Atkinson-cycle ICE sounds so annoying is that it reminds me of a conventional ICE in desperate need of a valve job. It's not that it's particularly loud; it's that it gives me a feeling that it's malfunctioning.

Probably the blowback on the intake side that makes it so loud. Thats what I dont like about these cars, both the 10 and 13, that annoying grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr it makes.

How so? Because of the different valve timing than an Otto cycle engine?

 

It is quite loud when the windows are down, with the car sealed up the noise isn't bad. Especially when accelerating in the city since the RPMs tend to be higher then and since you're moving at a lower speed you don't expect that much noise

Yep, thats what Im thinking. Since the intake is open during compression for a short period, it may be what makes it sound ugly. Could always remove the air filter and see if it gets louder.

There is a difference between the noise level between the FFH and the MKZ hybrid. I thought my FFH was quiet with the windows up. The MKZ is even quieter with the windows up at all speeds. With the windows down and traveling at low speeds they are about the same. There is also a difference in the ride between the two.

Grumble or "Grrrrrrrrrr" is not a bad way to put it. The point is that it's so very far away from "vrooom" that I just can't shake the impression that there's something wrong with it even though I know there's not. Even knowing that it's expected to sound like that, it's always going to make me uncomfortable just because it's SO different from the sound of the well-tuned engine that's been ingrained into my brain for the last half-century. If it has to be there, I sure wish Ford could find a way to silence it better. Let's face it, that sound is UGLY, and it needs to be covered up, because I don't think anyone's ever going to get used to it.

The Lincoln uses different glass, and more sound deadening, which is probably why it rates lower MPG. Have you compared the GVWR between the two?

I'm getting a little better gas mileage over the same route/distance with the MKZ.

 

Yes, I'm aware the MKZ is heavier.

Well? I was asking to find out what the weight difference is. Curious since I know they use different materials between the cars.
