Cracking noise FIX

Recommended Posts

Had new correct leather shifter installed today, along with "Battery Saver Off" TSB performed, Service Rep stated that thrust washers for TSB for crackling noise are not available to order yet. Anyone in Dallas, Ft Worth have any luck in getting washers and having installed, ??? I know some areas given recent posts on this forum were able to get they mystery washers to solve crackling noise problem....

Fun Service Story:

So I drive into Salem Ford in Salem NH and want to make an appointment to get this fixed. They have a poor reputation but it's closer to my house than the dealer I bought the car from, so I figure what the heck. I didn't want to judge them on hearsay.

I go to service and I mention the cracking sound issue and the guy at the desk is immediately confused but is more than happy to make an appointment. He doesn't want my VIN, nor does he care about the TSB. I insist that he take the VIN and start ordering parts, as certain parts like the shifter knob - Ford knows which cars they left them off of. The service guy tells me no way - they cannot order parts without inspecting the car and that ALL other Ford dealers work this way. Maybe he's right, but I honestly don't care how they're supposed to operate. I know what issues my car has and it doesn't take a mechanic to realize they shipped the wrong shifter knob or that my car pops when it moves forward or stops.

So essentially he's making me drive the car into the dealer, leave the car there for the day so they can find out they don't have the parts they need to fix it, and ask me to come back later when they eventually get them.

Rediculous... Needless to say I cancelled my appointment as I could tell their main interest was making money, not providing service. I'll call the dealer where I bought the car, as at least they've heard of the cracking issue.

I'm starting to see why dealers are terribly afraid of Tesla. In some service plans, Tesla will drive to you and leave you a loaner.

If Ford President Alan Mullaly were here with me, I'd kick him in the nuts.

The Ford dealer I go to already does this.

Equus is doing this too. To think, Hyundai used to be toss aside cars, and Kia too, now they have a 46K car in their lineup.

Good news, I received an email from my service advisor this morning telling me that all the parts were in stock. I'm at the dealer getting the washers installed. I'll post what my first impression is and follow up after getting some time and miles on my FFH.

Okay, the TSB 13-5-24 is done. On my drive home I drove through quiet streets with air and radio off, windows down. It was very quiet and seemed smoother (probably wishful thinking). No noise and I really tried to repeat the conditions I'm so used to hearing. I'll report back in a few weeks after getting some miles on the car.

I dropped my car off at the dealer this morning for the TSB. Looking forward to quiet driving and not cringing each time i hear the cracking noise.

I'm quite jealous. My build date is outside the TSB range and my dealer insists my car already has the thrust washers. Yet I continue to hear the noise loud and clear every day.

Got a call from the dealer and they said the noise is gone, but Ford sent 2 sets of parts to do both axles, except they only sent one thrust washer....grrrrr. The service advisor was clearly annoyed at Ford. He said the washers are on backorder, so he ordered it, and I will go back to complete that part of the repair whenever the washer comes in. Will be picking the car up after work.

Well, it looks like the complete fix will need to be done to cure the clicking noise completely. I drove to the gym after picking it up and all was quiet, but on the way home from the gym, i heard the noise 3 or 4 times on the short trip home. Both decelerating and accelerating. Heard it a few times this morning too. Not as bad as before and it doesnt happen all the time, with less clicks per occurence, but still there. Will call the service advisor just to note my findings.

I'm happy to say, almost 2200 miles and no clicking, so looks like they did get the problem solved by the time mine hit the line. The other one was quite noticeable. When my wife gets out of the car and stops me when I start to roll and asks, Whats that noise? you know it was loud.

I had my fusion hybrid se in yesterday to fix the sync, (see those posts), showed the service manager the tsb and told him my car intermittently makes the noise. He drove it and said he couldn't hear anything so just to wait for it to get worse. He also couldn't believe my fuel mileage (it's averaging after 3400 miles 44.7 mpg). I don't think my service people know much if anything about hybrids. They are more interested in selling pickups to the bakken oil boomers. I really like this car and hope it doesn't need much service, I may need to try out our Lincoln dealer for service next time.

My Dealer performed the TSB 13-5-24 for the Ting/Pop/Click-type noise to the Front Halfshafts.

My car no longer makes that noise on acceleration and braking, all tight and quiet now.

Oops, now the right front has a metal on metal grinding/rubbing sound. It's getting worse too.

Back to the Dealer, if it will make it.

Sigh

Just curious, is there anybody who is in the process of this fix who is *NOT* getting both axles done at the same time?

I need to check with my dealer to see if the parts have come in yet and I suppose I want to make sure he has

2 sets to do left and right axles. UPDATE - Dealer said he has 2 on order for me and release date is 07/28

- whatever that means.

Also, do the parts come in as a kit? My dealer said he was buying the parts from another dealer - I guess as

a favor to me - but not sure why alot of people are getting bits and pieces of the fix and not the full set of

parts? The TSB clearly lists all the parts together. Why would they get some parts or the wrong parts?

Point of note - I actually went to two dealers for the part - the first had me bring it in, confirmed the problem

and ordered the parts. I was the first person to claim this issue. They absolutely could not order parts without

a confirmed problem and a vehicle to tie them to.

Then I happened to be at the dealer I purchased from and I ask the service manager about the TSB and the parts.

He said, yes he knew of the problem, and he was ordering "many" kits for stock (at least 8 sets). He took my name

and said he'd reserve a set for me. I checked and I am waiting on these as well. So whichever dealer gets the

parts first, I'll go to. So clearly the dealers can get these parts any way they want to. They only get paid for them

once they do the work on a specific car.

So clearly

I will find out tomorrow morning. I will be dropping my car off to get the cracking/popping sound fixed. The dealership got the parts in on Friday. I will be picking up my car Thursday morning as I can't stick around and wait for it to get repaired.

Hopefully this will fix the issue...

Just got a call from the dealer that my other thrust washer was in. First time they were sent 2 kits but with only one washer. Car continued to make the noise just not as much. Taking it in Friday. Hopefully no more noise.

All fixed. :)

The mechanic somehow bent both (yes, both) brake backing plates so they would rub the outer edge of the rotor.

It was touching outside of the swept area of the Pad, I was shown pictures.

A lot of noise for such a small mistake.

The dealer went out of their way to minimize any hardship to me during this repair of a repair.

They are great.

Just had my car fixed with this TSB. They fixed both sides (driver and passenger) and now it's 100% fixed. No noise at all. I love it! It was to the point it was getting way to loud and happening all the time.

Called the dealer and like others on here Ford only sent a single thrust washer, but two of everything else. Wtf is this?

My dealer called me to say he is now ordering TSB parts from a Ford central parts hub out of Detroit and

at my request, he put in an order for 2 sets (both axles). Know I need at least 1 axle, but said

I want to make sure they have 2 sets so as not to waste time when I do bring the car in.

The parts are only about $20 so they had no problem doing this. But the interesting thing

is they had originally told me they were ordering "many" of the repair kits with 1 to be reserved

for me, but now they tell me they will only order if you have the confirmed problem.

Expected to arrive in a few days (after waiting 1 month)

So the parts now may be available to be shipped and you may want to nudge your dealership

if you are still waiting for them.
