Fuel Gauge Accuracy

It would seem that my fuel gauge is not very consistent. After filling my tank and resetting the trip meter I have noticed that the first half of the tank drops like there is a hole in the tank. The first quarter was gone in about 36 miles, currently I have 112 miles on the first half of tank and the trip meter states that I have only used 3.9 gallons.

At this rate it would be an 8 gallon tank. My mpg hovers around 37-39

From this point on it would seem that the gauge does not move from the half mark to the last quarter of the tank for some time, and then seems to progress normally or as expected from quarter to close to empty.

 

Does anyone know if the gauge can be recalibrated at the dealer, or is this something I'm stuck with?

Anyone else seeing this problem?

It's pretty much normal, and it's on all cars, not just the Fusion. In my Gti i would get about 200 miles on the first half and 100-150 on the second half. It's not a linear distribution. Check out the other fuel tank related threads here and on BOF - this issue was brought up before and there's lots of good info there.

Give it some time too, I found that the first dozen tanks were all over the place and they eventually got consistent, unlike the weird MPG readouts.

Yup my old car would do the same too. Its not linear - drops more quickly for the first half than the second.
