2013 Fusion Hybrid Titanium fuel Mileage

As the new HyTi owners get their cars, could we get a idea how the mileage stacks up against the SE's? I expect it will not be much (any?) different, but it might be nice to have a thread to make it easier to keep track of.

I'm still learning how to drive mine .... Yesterday on the way home I got 33.6 on the highway (12 miles @ 70) and this morning I got 36.1 by taking back roads (12.3 miles, mostly 55, some city driving at 35).

 

I'm finding it hard to go in EV at 55 MPH, unless I'm going downhill and don't need any power to keep the car moving. Going on a flat road, the power needed to keep the car going is more than the EV threshold, even with a 3/4 charged battery. It also doesn't seem to coast too much. Coming to a stop sign, I can pretty much let go of the gas pedal and it'll stop on it's own. I'm driving with the climate off, radio on.

 

I'm trying to use cruise control, but I keep pushing the wrong buttons. I'm used to pushing the lane assist button to set the speed, not having to turn it on when I turn the car on and using the + button to resume speed. The Fusion is totally different, so I'll have to get used to it.

Once you have it a couple weeks, your foot starts to become very in-tune with the pedal and you'll be able to get it into EV mode a lot easier. I've noticed myself noticing the "feel" of the car a lot more than I ever did with previous vehicles.

Hope so! My previous vehicle was a manual, so I had to get the "feel" of the car :) Can't properly change gears unless you know exactly what the engine is doing!

Yeah, I know what you mean. 2 cars ago, for me, was a manual. I guess it's pretty similar really, when I think about it. But even from one manual to another the "feel" takes some adjusting to. Now, after about a month of driving, I can feel when the motor is charging the battery, discharging, etc. Takes a while because the car rides so smooth and quiet!

And as the weather warms up it will get even easier to do this. To me, the biggest killer of mileage is

just moderately colder weather (50s or below). Just the engine running to keep the car warm is

where alot of the gas goes.

I don't think it's the car as much as the driver ... My wife got 44 MPG the day we picked it up, going about 50-55 ...

Whew, had me worried there, thats exactly how mine acted! I know it wasnt my driving though, not when you see what I get in my other cars! LOL

The not coasting issue does not sound normal. Mine coasts just fine. It does not slow to a stop on its own. I think acdii had the same coasting issue with his?

I think I'm starting to get the hang of this. Two trips this afternoon. It's not the 47-50 everyone is is reporting, but it's consistent! This is city driving, mostly going 35, but on the last trip I got up to 55! Temps around 50F.

You only have 258 miles on the car.... mine started the same way then once past the 'break-in' stage it improved.

I noticed the same about the weather!

Maybe our FFH's wanna tell us; Please only drive me in sunny weather that's where I look the best and sparkle the most.

Yeah, same here, it does not Like rain, neither of them. The 10 only got 34 this morning. Sad puppy here. Of course it was during a pounding hard rain too.

I don't know how I should feel about this one. I was cruising at 55-60 on the highway behind a truck 90% of the time.

Good question but I have noticed trying to stay around 60 mph does hurt the mpg. As stated by others (acdii) before it seems that the ICE is pretty fuel efficient as long it doesn't need to charge the HVB all the time.

I can set my cruise to 68 mph and the instant mph is hovering around 40 mpg.

You can't stay in EV for very long at that speed but it takes a way longer before the HVB is recharged.

 

I have pretty much given up on trying to go EV on the interstate as long I can drive 65 mph very consistent on ECO cruise I'm happy with the mpg's.

If you can stay on ICE, it will take a while, but eventually you will find its sweet spot and be able to keep it there while staying within 5 MPH of your given speed. So say you are doing 65, you can be anywhere between 63 and 70 MPH on ICE while staying in the 40 range. Thats what I eventually learned mine would do. It takes time to learn these cars, but once you learn their nuances, they become second nature. It transitions into other cars too, thats how I am able to get over 20 MPG in the Flex and 40's in the 10 FFH all highway.

 

Lets just say, with the miles you have on it now, you are doing much better in yours than I did in mine at that speed, I rarely got above 35.

 

You know what might be helpful to all is before shutting down, take a shot of the battery SOC, and then the trip summary. this would give a better idea on battery usage, maybe some are using too much battery which is sucking up fuel to recharge.

 

Neod, ignore the acceleration coach, and focus on the brake coach. Maybe you arent giving it enough gas to get up to speed. I noticed a slight improvement when I did that.

I have a total of five trips on my new HyTi. So pleased with it. It's really exceeding expectations, and it's not even about the MPGs. it's just such a great and comfortable car, such a pleasure to drive!

 

Anyway back to MPGs, All trips were driven in very different conditions.

 

Coming home from dealer was windy, cold and raining. Got about 42 MPGs mostly highway.

To work this morning, still wet roads and sprinkling, took the back roads and got 39 MPG.

Came home early afternoon, mostly highway, again 42 MPG.

Went to a Drs appt, some highway, some city streets 45 MPGs.

Came home, highway was stop and go, mostly stop. Took 40 minutes to travel less than 10 miles. I found the car handled that very well and stayed at a steady 42 MPG.

 

Mostly I have not been using any A/C except for this morning when I needed to defrost. I should add that by this afternoon, the skies were blue.

You've made my day TX. I've found many times in my life that my high exceptations for something I've heard many great things about end up in a let down feeling once I've actually experienced it. That's why I like to see movies before hearing others talk about them. I'm glad the descriptions of the FFH that this Forum has given you didn't lead to a disappointment. The FFH is an amazing car.

First full tank experience & stats. *Note: This is my first time owning/driving any type of Hybrid. I turned in a leased 2011 Escape & 2008 Mustang for my new HyTi.

 

Location: Michigan (Detroit area)

Weather: Mid 30's

Climate Control use: Tried to only use it after a few minutes on the way to work. Never used my remote start to "pre warm" the car. Shut it off with about 5 minutes left arriving to work/home.

Other factors: Carpooled for a total of 4 people for military service for 92 miles.

 

Total miles: 388.0 (18 miles till empty) Average 35.0 MPG. Just filled up the tank 11 gallons for only $38.71!

 

This was about as bad as it will get I believe. I'm very new to Hybrid driving, I live in the north and it's cold still, and I had a full weighted down car for 92 miles of 388. I'm VERY happy with the vehicle.
