cracking noise

Recommended Posts

So this is my first hybrid (and first question post on this forum!) so I am still learning about the ways of a hybrid car. In the past few weeks I have been noticing a cracking noise every time I accelerate in EV mode, usually just cracks once or twice and then does the same thing when decelerating into a stop in EV mode. And then a few days ago, I parked in my friends driveway and left the car on, when I got out, the engine was off but the car was making a nonstop clicking noise. Is this normal or sound familiar to anyone? Thanks for the help.

BTW I have the 2013 FFH

I have all the noises you are describing as well. I thought about asking the dealer about the ones while driving. I am guessing the one while the engine is off is something normal with the hybrid battery.

Yep, when rolling out from a stop, I hear 2 clicks, but only when in EV. Might be a relay, or other component in the Hybrid CVT.

Have the same cracklin sound, sometimes when coasting to stop in EV but always when accelerating from stop, could it the brake system or something to do with with electric motor??? annoying...since it happens all the time when go from dead stop??????? this seemed to start when I had 500 or so mile on it, planning to call service mgr at local Ford dealer...

I have something similar, it typically sounds almost like a "clink" if I had to describe it. The sound seems to me to be coming only from the front two wheels, as far as I can tell. If you do ask the dealer, please report back!

I was thinking something was loose, so at acceleration it rotates back and hits something, then when braking it rotates the opposite way and clinks back against the other side. If I'm not the only one hearing that, then maybe it isn't something loose!

Have your dealer drop the under fairings to see if something is loose. They shouldn't make any noises.

Have it in the dealer shop checking for source of cracklin noise as described when I accelerate from stop,, still checking, hopefully they can find issue... they seem to think its not normal for FFH 2013... post more tomorrow...

Doesn't sound normal to me, mine does not do that. The only noticeable thing I hear is a fan running in the right rear bumper area after it has shut off... normal HVB cooling, but just sounds like the fan is in a different place than the 2010, but still normal.

Dealer Service Mgr. called me, , after two days of trying to trace crackling noise issue, thinks it a defective passenger side front strut, ordered one, will change out on Monday, very disappointed with only 780 miles on vehicle...

I had a "clunk" in the left front suspension of my 2010 FFH when I went over a certain manhole cover on my street. It went away about a year or so ago.

I have the same noises you are all having as well. It always happens right at acceleration or when I begin to break or come to a stop while breaking. The dealership near me was unable to help me with this problem and I have had it for almost 4 months now. The response i got from them was.... " Ford looked into this issue and it isnt something that could endanger you so ..... Tough luck..... "

If your dealer finds the solution to this problem please post it as i am very upset with my car so far... I have A ticking noise coming my drivers side near the side view mirror that happens anytime i drive over bumps and even my rear window has a defect. THere is a streak accross the window that you cannot see with the naked eye but when looking out the back form my rear view mirror it distorts anything im looking at making it smaller.

This is my first ford purchase and i must say..... Never again.

Yeah, I also have the distortion across the rear window, although I have had this on other cars before.

Mine has ~3k miles now, and the sound has been there for a while - can't remember when I first heard it, but probably somewhere between 1-2k (it may have been there beforehand, but I just didn't notice it).

rvlasek - Let us know if replacing the strut fixes the sound, would be good to provide the local dealer some guidance on what could be the issue beforehand. In contrast to a "clunk" or other "hard" noise, for me it really is more of a click. Oh, if only click and clack were still on the air I think they'd have fun with this one.

OHOH C&C is no longer on? I have been listening to podcasts lately, when did they retire?

I have distortion in the center of my rear window too. Makes objects look smushed and stretched out. It is a bit annoying but i am not sure if bringing it up to the dealer will do anything.

Yeah, unfortunately they retired late last year - there are still reruns on all the time, but no new shows :(

Will post results of service visit concerning cracking noise from front, still in service, said they were going to replace passenger side front strut, thinking it cause of noise when starting to accelerate from stop...

Local Ford service Manager called and stated that replacing passenger front strut and bearing did not fix crackling/pop noise issue, they contacted the Ford service hotline and Ford Corporate stated this is a known reported problem/ issue and working on fix, no more parts should be installed on my vehicle until fix is found... they opened case for it and I should be contacted when fix is discovered, so that's where it stands, I have car back and noise issue persists....fyi, any further info will be posted...

Good to know Ford is aware of the problem (if they actually are). I am experiencing the same thing and it doesn't sound very good - almost as if the engine is loose in its mounts as the G force of stopping and accelerating pull and push it against pins.

Here is what I know so far:

- It happens on both the right and left side of the vehicle - one side after another

- It happens if you stay in EV or not

- It feels related to the G forces the car encounters during acceleration and deceleration, as if something is loose.

Please keep us apprised! I've book marked this thread and will check back regularly.

I do not know if this is related, but discusions of a similar start/stop noise, on another forum led to a conclusion that the noise was coming from the brake pads shucking in the calipers upon acceleration/deceleration. It appeared that the brake pads did not have shim springs that were tight enough to keep the pads from moving around in the calipers. Could the metalic sound you are hearing be coming from the general location of the front brake pads/calipers?

Yes mine does sound like its in the area of the wheel wells on both sides and what you said does make sense that it's the brakes... Its a really harsh noise and no other car I've driven has this type of problem.
