2013 Hybrid Gas Tank Size

Recommended Posts

I think i remember reading that the hybrid gas tank size was 13.5 gallons.

If you look online at Ford, it now states the tank size is 14 gallons.

16.5 FWD/17.5 AWD/14.0 Hybrid and Energi Plug-In Hybrid

Has the tank been redesigned or are they now rounding up?

Just another inconsistency at Ford

Who knows. Apparently the assembly line didn't get the memo as I heard some non hybrids got the 13 gallon tank instead of the 16 gallon one.

I read last night that the tank is 13.5 gallons. Still waiting on my first fill up. At my current mpg average should get 600 miles on a tank of gas.

Waiting as well. Wow 600!!! That's better than 47, isn't it? Edited by coach81

Both the manual and most recent brochure show a 13.5 gallon tank on the hybrid. Ford.com is most likely where the error is ...

Was at 32 miles to empty last night on the tank fill from Galpin. I drove off the lot with 17 miles on the OD. When I filled it up the pump stoped at 10.6 gal. I have never toped off a 2000+ car so you guys are saying I still had 2.somthing gal left to fill the tank? Hmmm. Have been getting mid 40's MPG in rush hour traffic on the 405 / 110 / 710 and just hit 556 on the OD.

Hi BeerNuts, welcome to the forum. I got my '10 Milan HY from a lady on 2nd st. in Belmont Hights. Drove it home to Bloomington, IL, Home of Beer Nuts. :)

Larger tank also means you are carrying around more unburned gas. Extra weight = worse gas mileage. I cannot think of a reason for a 620 mile range, even though that won't get me to two of the state borders from where I live in Central Texas... My car now has about 350ish miles on a tank. It's not like there's a shortage of stations.

I'd happily trade 2 gallons of the 14 in the Energi for trunk space.

I cannot think of a reason why I wouldn't want a 600 mile range. When you are traveling for long stretches, the fewer gas stops the better. When you have a packed car, including dogs, you do not want to make extra unnecessary stops. And when your trip is 1,100 miles non-stop, as I do twice a year, it is very nice to only have to stop for gas twice. And I arrive with a pretty full tank at that.

With the large tank (17+ gal I think) in our 2010 Milan Hybrid, we can be selective when we buy gas. The local stations seem to be a 2 to 3 week cycle of pushing gas prices up sharply and slowly leting them fall for a while before spiking them back up. Since we can go 4 to 6 weeks on a fill up, we can top up the tank when gas prices come down and just cruse by the filling station when they push the prices up. If we are low on gas when prices are high, we can just buy a couple of gallons and wait for the stations to back off on the price. On long trips, we use Gas Buddy to schedule our fill ups. With a 600+ mile range we can be selective and save. Over time, this produces a real hybrid savings "bonus". Last year drove to both oceans, averaging 36 mpg, and planning fuel/food/lodging stops and seeing who could hammer out the best prices became a great highway game.

got 11.5 gallons in for first fill up..

Are you certain it filled up? How many extra clicks at the pump?

Sounds about right. around 1/4 tank is about 9.5 gallons. I dont think the fuel gauge is linear enough in these tanks. I also believe they have a venting issue, which is why a lot of owners have problems getting a complete fill, an air bubble gets caught at the top of the tank, so it cant be filled unless you want it to gush back out at you.

It showed full on the display... pushed it until 2 clicks...

I got my first low gas warning last night. The fuel gauge turning yellow is a nice reminder. By the time I got to the Chevron station this morning, I had a 25 mile indicated range left. It took 11 gallons after one extra click.

Had to fill my FFH 13 last Friday, DTE said 1mile, managed to get 11.3 gallons in, somewhere there is a missing 2.2 gallons.

On a related note, if you go into Engineering mode there are 2 DTE values, Display & Instrument. Instrument shows higher than Display by various amounts up to15miles. I suspect this is the safety net that Ford builds in because so many people believe they can run their cars on fumes. Can others confirm these 2 values behave the same on their cars.

The DTE is an estimate based on the recent MPG history... I think in the 2010 manual it said it was based on the previous 500 miles MPG, I don't think the 2013 manual has a number in there but the concept is the same. A couple tanks ago when the weather was good and I was doing very well in MPG I had 320 miles on the tank and I checked the DTE and I think it was around 350 or thereabouts, seemed suspect but understandable since I was getting very good MPG (recent cold snap quashed that a bit) and I believe that's how the DTE is calculated.

On my last tank that DTE was 16 and it took 11.67 gallons, so I guess when you get the DTE down near zero there's 'roughly' 2 gallons left? You can be like Kramer on the Seinfeld episode and try your luck and see how much farther you can go, I figure that at 0 DTE I could push it for another 50 miles if needed but don't plan to do so... with a 120-mile daily commute and gas being about 30¢/gallon cheaper near home than near work, I always plan to fuel up near home and so at times I might fill up even though it says 100 miles DTE, oh well.

Toz - I don't keep track of miles per tank. The current range reads 458, but the actual is probably closer to 400. It depends upon how much time I spend at 73+ mph.
