Need subjects for an experiment

Recommended Posts

Using the RPM gauge on the MyView, do a drive of about 20 miles keeping engine RPM's 2000 or less, driving up to 55 MPH and report your summary. Curious how a properly running car will do.

Do you want steady cruise on the beltway, major artery with occasional lights or something else preferred?

Mixed driving, city/highway, max speed 55 though. Key here is not to exceed 55 MPH or 2000 RPMs. It is not easy to do, but it did show me the best MPG on this car since I got it.

When I get my car I could see doing that to help you out ... but I don't think I could drive like that for long.

Did the experiment for you this afternoon. did two legs of 18.8 miles each. Just backtracked on the second 18.8 miles so hills, etc. would balance out. Run was on rural state highway with 55mph limit passing through a few small towns with limits between 35 and 45mph. There was a couple of traffic lifghts and maybe four or five stop signs. I would say 75% was at 55mph. Kept the rpms at 2000 or less and speed at 55mph or less. The first 18.8 miles logged 58.3 mpg and the return leg was 39.8mpg for an averagge of 49. did the entire run on manual throttle, no cruise control. A lot of work to maintain speed limits and not exceed 2000rpm. It was noticeable that very little throttle pressure would take me out of EV and back to ICE and right at 2000rpm. any way was quite pleased with what the mileage turned out to be. The ambient temperature when I did this was 52 deg. F.

I did a test similar to this a while back, not too long after I got the car. Had about 900 miles on it (now have about 2500 miles). Set the Eco-Cruise to the following speed and drove 30 miles and recorded the following MPG. Weather was relatively warm, like 65-75 Deg.

50 MPH -- 49 MPG

55 MPH -- 44 MPG

60 MPH -- 41 MPG

65 MPH -- 36 MPG

Does your Fusion have the 18 inch wheels or 17 inch? I think this is useful information. Thanks!

Holy crap, best I can get is 41, and that is keeping it 2K or below, mostly below. I also have my tires at 40 PSI instead of 34. OK thanks guys, glad to see better than 47 with this method for most.

Here is what I discovered so far, at or below 63 MPH its best to drive without any cruise, use it above 63. Accelerate very gently, 2000 RPM or less, and watch your SOC, when you get between 1/2 and 3/4 thats when to switch to EV, and glide until 1/4 SOC or when ICE kicks in.

I think I will see if the dealer has a Cmax on the lot, and see about taking it for a trip like this and then the same trip in the Fusion with them and compare.

I have the 18" wheels. Forgot to mention that this test was done on a stretch of road that had small rolling hills and the 30 miles was round trip. For acdii's test, it was done on a flat road where the highest hill is an freeway overpass. I think what acdii says above is correct. On the drive to work this morning, again set Eco-Cruise to 62 MPH, mostly flat roads and got about 39-40 MPG, temps about 62. I watched the tach and at times it went over 2000 RPM.

I can always best the Ecocruise, that was my first clue that something is not right with my car, when I couldn't beat it. Now that I see what this car can do, I KNOW something is wrong with it, but Ford is unwilling to admit it and find the problem, That has got me pissed!

Yours is kind of a nightmare scenario.

I attempted to follow your experiment as best I could this morning on my commute to work. I have an 18.6 mile trip to work one 2 lane roads, speeds between 35-50 mph. I hit 4 lights on my way in, and it is quite hilly. I changed my MyView screen to have the tachometer and temp gauge, and used the Empower screen to gauge the EV level as I was accelerating. There were 4-5 hills where I had to go just over 2000 rpm (just a tick or 2 over the 2K line) so I didn't lose too much speed. The results were my best yet...46.6 mpg. This was on a cold engine from home, and I had the climate off about 2/3 of the time. 38 degrees. Just over 1000 miles on the car.

It helped that the person in front of me for most of the trip was going between -5 mph and right at the speed limits most of the time. Usually people are on my a$$ for going the speed limit or just under. I like to stay around the speed limit as to not pi$$ people off, but I was used to going 5-10 over with my previous 05 TL. It wasn't actually that painful to drive this way this morning, and I actually felt the EV levels stayed higher and more consistent throughout the trip. I won;t be able to see how the trip home compares since I am going to my partner's house tonight, but I will try it again on Monday to see how it does. I am pretty happy :)

I did the return trip from work a little bit ago, and got 48.7 mpg. Once again I had a few hills where i had to go a bit over 2000 rpm, and the temp was slightly higher at 41 degrees. Very happy with this result :)
