MikeS Report post Posted October 8, 2010 I was listening to one of my favorite tech podcasts (Buzz Outloud), and I got the impression that SYNC only works with 'feature/dumb' phones for reading SMS text messages, because the dumber phones use MAP protocol, something that's not common for smarter phones like Android & iPhone. Is that true? Is anyone using iPhones or Android for reading SMS messages? Any other sync issues ?? Just 2 more days till I get my car !! Sooo excited! MikeS Report post Posted October 8, 2010 Through the power of google, I am sad to learn that my Android Evo 4g smart phone is not as smart as I had hoped: http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/05/htc-evo-4g-gets-silver-ford-sync-rating.html It only earns a sync "silver" level of compatibility. It does NOT read texts :-( I'm really sad because I told all my friends it would, assuming the most sophisticated smartphone on the planet would be capable of doing that. MikeS Report post Posted October 10, 2010 Worse than "silver": I can't get the address book to sync with my Android EVO 4g: it starts and after a few minutes, it breaks connection with the car. I did some googling, and sure enough, others have the same problem. I followed their advice and turned off auto-address book downloading, and at least now it can sustain a connection and I can dial on the phone, and speak/listen during a call through the car. My partner's Epic 4G on sprint pairs and downloads fine. Ironic, since I drive the most, and I'm the gadget nerd. Mike

Mike I have t he same issue, also had it with my LG lotus but not my HTC Touch Pro 2, I emailed sync and got the following email: Thank you for your email in regards to SYNC. Please complete a master reset to SYNC and a soft reset to your mobile phone,Once the reset is complete re-pair your phone with SYNC. A master reset allows you to completely erase all information stored in SYNC(all phone book, call history and text message information as well as allpreviously paired phones) and return to the factory default settings. To perform a master reset:Note: To scroll, press SEEK or the Up/Down arrows.1. Press the Phone Button to enter the PHONE MENU.2. Scroll repeatedly until SYSTEM SETTINGS appears in the radio display.3. Press OK to enter the SYSTEM SETTINGS MENU.4. Scroll repeatedly until ADVANCED appears in the radio display. Press OK.5. Scroll repeatedly until MASTER RESET appears in the radio display6. Press OK. SYNC will ask you to confirm the reset.7. Press OK to confirm. The radio display will read ALL RESET.SYNC will take you back to the ADVANCED SETTINGS MENU I would recommend performing a soft reset on the phone. To do that, removethe battery from the phone while the phone is still powered on. Thenre-insert the battery and power the phone back on. Sometimes the BluetoothLink in the phone will freeze when the phone is left on all the time, and willnot allow the Bluetooth connection to work properly. By resetting the phone,it will reset the Bluetooth, and then allow it to work normal. " I haven't tried it yet, on a side note, there is like 4 phones that actually support txt to speech to sync on that list and they are all really old phones. Not sure why no new ones support it. MikeS Report post Posted October 12, 2010 Don't Reset. Turn off auto download of phonebook and beam individual contacts back to the car: (I just posted this on the sync forum, but hope this helps) ------------------ This is for a 2011 Fusion with NAV: I was very disappointed that my Android Evo 4G on Sprint could not successfully upload its phone book to the fusion (it kept disconnecting half way through). The work around for that was to turn off automatic phone book downloading in the car. But then, you have no address book. The work-a-round for that was to go into settings on the phone screen on the car, modify the address book, and then send individual contacts via bluetooth to the car. This is actually preferable because there's really only 6 or 7 people I would ever call while driving, and uploading my entire address book of 500 contacts could result in a misinterpreted voice command dialing someone completely inappropriate. After you request a manual add a contact, the car instructs you to send the contact. Go to the android people app | menu | send | change the drop down from mms to bluetooth. Then click Sync and it beams the contact. This is from memory, so some of the menus or words may not be exact, but this worked for me. I'm sooo excited to be able to voice dial with my android smartphone !!! Mike

DR SAW Report post Posted October 22, 2010 @ Mike: Brilliant! My Incredible was not pairing too well on my new Fusion. Read your fix, and not only does my phone stay paired (never really did when sync phone book was toggled on), but also just put in the 15-20 people who I talk to usually. Like you said, why should I put 500+ contacts in and confuse the voice command even more. Thanx!
MikeS Report post Posted October 23, 2010 I''m glad it worked for you. I was really heart broken when my new fusion wouldn't pair with my Android Evo. I'm a big tech gadget nerd, and I told everyone how my new car would talk to my phone. I am still miffed that my phone won't talk text messages, but I'm not switching to verizon from spirnt and spend $50 more each month for the privilege. Moosehead Report post Posted October 24, 2010 It can't read text's off my BlackBerry 9700 but everything else works fine. It does look like most smartphones aren't compatible. I guess they lock the messages down in their own proprietary way in order to enable all the cool features they can do, and Sync doesn't know how to read each manufacturer's method.I hope the next version of Sync not only handles most SmartPhones, but also integrates with email. Imagine the voice reading a whole email to you :)

DR SAW Report post Posted October 24, 2010 (edited) @ MikeS - Two questions (since you are the 'guru'): 1. I have Verizon - does this mean i have test compatibility with Sync, or does it also come don to the phone model? 2. When you answer a phone call with Sync, can you adjust the volume of call to a louder default? Thx Edited October 24, 2010 by DR SAW

Has nothing to do with the provider. Also note that the list of phones on syncmyride.com is just the list of phones that Ford has actually tested - doesn't mean other phones won't work. MikeS Report post Posted October 26, 2010 2. Sync volume (volume of the sync voice is controlled with the radio volume knob (or up/down buttons on the steering wheel. There's a separate volume for the nav voice accessible from the menu button | feedback | voice volume. 1. Dr Saw is right: it's not an exhaustive list. You could call ford to get any additional info, but if compatibility with your phone is important, maybe take it to a ford dealer and try it out on a 2011 model (which has the latest sync software). -Mike
