Crash test's

Recommended Posts

What changed after April of 2010 because on the iihs.org site it says Ford Fusion top safety pick for model's made after April 2010, and the roof crush test ratings Fusions built before April 2010 receive an acceptable rating while Fusion's built after April of 2010 get a good rating. Is the Fusion a safe car? I own a 2010 SEL V6 made before April of 2010 but I really feel uneasy now after reading this. Thanks everyone.

Hi locust. :D Yes, the Fusion is a safe car. What changed? I do not know. May have been no changes at all, just a better result in the latest round of crash testing due to intangibles. It does happen. Or the IIHS may have changed the testing methods. Or both.

For example, if you read the criteria carefully, in addition to roof crush strength, a vehicle must also have "standard electronic stability control" on all models to receive a "Good" rating. So maybe ESC was made standard across the entire Fusion line after April of 2010. I do not know, just hypothesizing/thinking out loud.

Anyway, no matter what the actual reason/reasons were for the rating change, let's put things into the proper context: As even you state, the Fusion " before April 2010" received an "Acceptable" rating. It was not "Marginal". It was not "Poor" etc.. Acceptable means acceptable. At least in my opinion, this is certainly not something to feel "uneasy" about or begin losing sleep over.

Good luck. :beerchug:

I don't think the test criteria changed. If you read the data, the Fusion has a higher roof strength ratio for cars built after Apr 2010. It sounds like Ford implemented a manufacturing or design change in April which improved the test results. But that doesn't mean that cars built before April are unsafe ... they are still acceptable.
