Trying to decide whether to get HIDs

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I have a 2010 fusion sport and like many others I am disappointed by the stock halogen lowbeams. I am interested in installing an HID kit but I have a few things I want to know about before I do so.

These are the HIDs I'm thinking of getting: http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/DDM-HID-Kit-Slim-Ballast-35W-or-55W with the H11 bulbs of course

First off, I'm not sure if I should get 55w or 35w bulbs. The 55w are brighter but I'm sure the 35w are bright enough. I don't really want to be blinding other drivers (or getting pulled over) but I would also like to increase my nighttime visibility. I live in an area with lots of deer and the halogens aren't sufficient enough to reflect off the eyes of deer. Also, living in a semi-rural part of Maryland, the cops don't really have much to do and probably would be more willing to pull somebody over for having HIDs.

I have read of people having issues with the light out warning and with the flickering and then going out of the lights due to the lamps using less amps to run

The second thing I need to know is if I needed to get the harness and/or the error eliminator, which are options to buy in the above link, to prevent the flickering/light out warning issue. Also would the purchase of the harness/error eliminator be needed for both 35W and 55W bulbs?

The third thing is if having the 3.5L engine makes it different or any more difficult to install the HIDs. I have read of the pain-in-the-ass-nature of changing the passenger bulb in the regular models, is it just as big a pain in the sport?

My fourth and final question is whether installing HIDs invalidates any warranties. I have a few warranties from my dealer and don't want to lose those.

Hi mrkyle3. :D Since you already know about the legal issues, I will answer what I can:

1- Opinions will vary, but you will get plenty of illumination with the 35W systems.

2 - Whether you will need to purchase battery harnesses, BOW eliminators and other accessory wiring is really a coin flip. Some people seem to do okay without them while others have nothing but trouble with or without them.

3 - It is just as big a pain to replace the systems in the Sport as the regular models.

4 - Aftermarket HID kits can have Warranty ramifications. You can safely assume that if you have any sort of issue associated with your lighting system, or any type of electrical system problems at all which can be even remotely traced back to the HID modifications, your Warranty claim can/might be denied if the Dealer/Ford looks for or links it to the modifications. Of course, this does not mean they will always deny a claim. However, since it is determined on a case by case basis, you will never know unless it happens to you. Bottom line? Any modification that effectively changes the vehicle as it came from the factory can lead to a Warranty claim denial concerning that particular area of the vehicle, be it electrical, mechanical, etc..

Hope this information helps.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck. :beerchug:

I have the 55w 8000k HID's from ddmtuning, no special relays or any of that crap. Spent 50 bucks, measured them at 5000 lumens like they say, service was excellent, trust me, get the 55w kit, they will not throw a light on the dash, you will be very happy.
