Alternate Tire Recommendations for FFH

Just curious on this, I am nowhere near needing tires yet....but always want to be informed.

 

The stock tires on the FFH are:

 

Michelin Energy MXV4 S8 225-50-17

93V SL Green X / 420 A A / Max Load 1433 lbs.

$198.00 (as of 08-17-2009) (from Tirerack.com) -- they have 2 prices for this exact tire/size now - no idea why

Has anybody had to replace their tires yet (non-snow) and tried something else on the car?

Seems this would affect gas mileage alot. There are a few other "Green" tires out there such

as the Goodyear Fuelmax.

 

While these tires are expensive, they seem to be wearing well and ride well. I am getting

43-44/mph now in the warmer weather and do not want to gives this up.

Simple - they are 2 different tires, most likely different tread compounds as the treadwear rating is different (440 vs. 420). I think the Pilot HX MXM4 has at least 4 different versions - one for Ford, one for Honda, etc. They are all different thus the different prices. If you want to find out which one is the Ford OEM version just put in your vehicle info and it will show you the OEM tire.

I work for bridgestone/firestone and they offer a free change over when you purchase a new car. I took off the Michelins and put on the bridgestone turanza with serenity. While they are great in dry, wet, and light snow, they did negatively effect my mileage by 2-4 mpg. Bridgestone has a new line called ecopia, which is a low rolling resistance tire, in sizes for all the prius's but not the ffh size.

You may want to try the Continental extreme contacts in a slightly wider 235/50-17. 3/10ths larger diameter will be one mile per hour or less greater than stock. The advanage is not so much the hockey puck ride of the Michelins and quieter due to the slightly higher sidewall but the Continentals are by nature, quieter than the Michelins. If you feel the FFH rides rough because of the sport suspension sway bars, this may be the ticket for you. They are stock on BMW's and Mercedes Benzes. Mileage may drop a little but are $50 per tire less expensive. Do the math for a loss of one mile per gallon, how cost effective are the Michelins then? FMC used the tires to get the high MPG ratings for CAFE stadards so they could sell more Mustangs and pickup/SUV's.
