2010 Fusion hoods

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a 2010 Fusion from my local dealer. The car is awesome. However, I noticed that they all have two or three dents on the hood. My car, and 90% of the cars on the lot had these dents. White is the hardest to see, darker colors are easiest, especially blue and red. My car is Sport Metallic Blue.

The dents are not symmetrical, and not in exactly the same spot, but VERY close, in all the cars that I have inspected on my dealer's lot. This is an indication that it's a factory problem. I showed my dealer sales person, and the dealer body shop. No one knows anything about it, but they all agreed that they do have dents in them. A customer in the show room told me that he thought it might be the suction cups when they install the hood on the car at the factory.

This only has to do with the redesigned hoods on the 2010. I personally don't think there is a fix for it, since the sheet metal is thin, and the hood is pretty flat. Unless perhaps a supporting stantion is added ( a big task ).

Has anyone else noticed this on the 2010s? The dents are located asymmetrical to the centerline, and about 5 to 7 inches below the windshield washer suirters. You can see it best if the hood is clean and you walk slowly around the hood. Look at a sharp line in the reflection of the hood. The edge of a building can be used as a good straight line, and then notice the waviness as you look in this area. You will NOT notice this on other cars.

Many times, you don't even have to look as closely as I am suggesting as you can usually see it if you look at a slight angle.

I've even seen it on photos on the internet. And it's definitely not something that is designed-in.

Any ideas anybody?

Thoroughly examined my hood ('10 SEL manufactured 8/09) and subsequently the entire vehicle - No dents anywhere.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad yours is good. Mine was built 11/09. I went to two Ford dealers today and inspected about 120 Fusions! (They were all lined up, it didn't really take me that long.) Out of about 120, 118 had the defect I'm talking about. I can see it immediately. I found only 2 that were "good", "smooth".

I probably overstated the defect by calling it a dent. It's really closer to "read through" of the ribs or stantions on the under side of the hood. I saw it today in all colors, except white, you can only tell by watching the waviness of a sharp line reflection in the hood, as your eye passes over the hood. (The edge of a building, telephone line or light pole that's nearby.)

If you look at a slight angle from horizontal, from the side of the car, or look at a hood from a distance from the side, you can see the ripple in all (well, 99%) of the 2010 Fusions. They look like 2, 3 or 4 little "puddles". It's there. I know that 99% of owners will not notice this, but being in automotive (in the Detroit area) I see these things. Honestly I think Ford goofed up. I bet they fix it soon though. I'm going to call them on Monday.

My dealer's body shop offered to try and fix it, but I hate to have them hack on it, and it'll probably not get fixed anyway. Too difficult. These 2010 hoods are like flat mirrors.

Thanks again for your reply. I had one other reply and the guy said his car was made in early 2009. Maybe they made a slight change in the underhood structure mid-year which is causing this.

Oh well. Really it's a minor thing, it's not a Rolls Royce. Time to move on in life! Take care.

No dents on mine, built 4/09

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I checked a different dealer lot today. They had about 100 Fusions lined up in 3 rows. I walked down the rows and sure enougth, every single one of them except ONE had the ripples/"puddles" in the hood. Color didn't matter. It was odd that only one was without defect.... smooth. You can see it by looking at a slight anle above horizontal, or by a reflection in the hood. It may be "read through" from the rib structure on the underside of the hood.

Mine was built in 11/2009, and I'm sure all the cars on the dealer lot that I saw were built either on or after this date. Since yours has no defect, maybe Ford made a process change for some reason toward the end of '09.

Again, I appreciate the reply. Time to move on with life! This really is not a big issue.
