What happens if I run out of gas?

Recommended Posts

I'd rather not test this scenario out, but I am wondering what the FFH does if the car truly runs out of gas? I'm assuming that it will still "turn on". But upon pressing the accelerator gently, will it move? (assume flat terrain). If it does move, will it continue to move once it reaches the point of acceleration that would normally cause the gas engine to kick in? If the answer to all of these is "yes", then assuming a good charge on the battery, the question would be how many yards (or maybe how many seconds) the car would operate in this condition? Would it be enough, for example, to reach the shoulder of a road, or reach a ramp or turnoff?

Thanks,

Tim

The owners guide says (page 11, one of the FAQs) "Running out of gas is not recommended - however you may be able to go about one mile @ 30 MPH if the battery has a normal state of charge" so yes you can pull off the road but don't plan on going too far.
