tinting back window

Have people been having better luck with tinting the back window around the black dots? If so, do you just tell the guys off the bat about the "heat gun brush" tip or just let them have at it?

Haven't had mine (any windows) done yet, want to though, the places I've talked to both say the dots are no problem, not sure if they mean it or are just trying to make a sale -

I went all around (less front of course) and I ended up "squeegeeing" the black dots myself with my thumb. It turned out looking great.

can you explain that a bit? did you have to physically push out bubbles from every dot?

Pretty much - although it didn't take long and wasn't really difficult. Then the sun dried it and it turned out nice. If you look close you can see where there are little bubbles around some dots.

The black dots are raised so the tint adheres to the dots but not to the recessed spaces in between. That's what causes the white appearance. I had all windows tinted (even windshield) and then crawled into the back once a day for three days and pressed the tint into the recesses. It didn't turn out perfectly but it's good enough that no one notices unless they're standing next to the car and I point it out to them. However, when driving and the sun is behind the car, I can see it in the rear view mirror, but it's not enough for me to worry about. If you're a perfectionist it may bother you. :shrug:

perfectionist... i foresee a problem then haha. I plan to just bring it up with the tint shop before they even start to confirm they can do it.

The tint shop I used discloses that it may not turn out perfect around the dot matrix. They did as good a job as they could. There were still some small air spaces between the dots, but not enough to worry about. The day after I got it done I pressed it with my fingers and a soft cloth to try and get it to adhere a little better. Not sure I made much improvement though. I can live with it, it's not real noticable unless you get up close and really inspect it. The tint shop has an option for $70 they will cut off the tint where the dots are and use that as a template for a piece of black vinyl tape that they stick on. He said it looks really good but I think it looks great as it is.

In CA, it's not legal to put tint on on the windshield, driver's door or front passenger's door. But since it's so common I think they don't care much unless it's too dark. That being said, I had them put the lightest tint possible on the windshield to cut down on the heat (I'm in Palm Springs), medium on the front doors, dark on the three rear windows and mirrored on the sunroof. You'd be surprised how hot the sunroof gets in 115 degree blasts. It looks fantastic. The tint on the windshield is so light that you can't tell it's there, but the dash doesn't get hot and the cabin stays much cooler and the a/c cools it down very quickly. For some reason, the tint completely adhered to the dots around the rear view mirror, but not on the top of the back window. But it still looks great. :shades:

I had FormulaOne Comfort Tint put on my FFH, including the rear window. After trying for a week to get the tint to stick around the dots in the matrix I ended up letting the shop remove the tint from this area and put black vinyl across the dot matrix. Due to the slope of the rear window, there is no vision blocked by doing this. I am very happy with the outcome.

Well shoot, has anybody had success with tinting and having it look perfect on the back window? There has got to be a way or else it is a design flaw in my book

If I had to do it over again, I would ask them to tint just short of the black dot area. I think that would look much better.

If it's well done, I would think it would not be too visible. The alternative is much more apparent.

We had our windows tinted today on our MMH. When I first talked to them about doing the windows I expressed lots of concern over the dots on the back window. They were not worried. They said they did have a few problems with that type of window until they found a technique that worked. They went on to explain that they install the tint to fit and then pull the tint down to the bottom of the dots. They use a hair dryer to dry the dots then carefully reapply the tinting while squegeeing the tinting over the dots. I was told that they have to be extremely careful because there is no taking it off again without damaging the tint. If they get a wrinkle they have to cut a new piece and start over.

 

I picked up our Milan and it was perfect. It Looks GREAT. The areas around the dots have the same appearance as the area in the center of the window. Now I have to remember not to roll the windows down for 3-days. I’ll be the one to screw it up.
