Headlight lens

Recommended Posts

Hi. I recently purchased a new Fusion and was wondering what, if any, steps I should take to protect the headlight lenses from turning hazy or yellow over time. I know that once this damage occurs, there are polishes available to fix the problem, but since mine are still new and undamaged I am worried that the polishes would do more harm than good by removing the factory protectant. I was thinking about applying Armor All after I wash the car to prevent problems from occurring. Would Armor All damage the headlight lens? Are there products that are intended specifically to protect the lenses? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Paladin. :D Do not apply ArmorAll. And there is no need to use a plastic polish on a new plastic headlamp cover. Those polishes are meant to restore damaged covers.

As it states in our Owners Manuals, simply clean with a good quality automotive glass cleaner, then apply a coat of quality car wax and buff off as you would on your paint finish. And remove bug splatter, bird droppings and other types of contaminants as soon as possible, before they can permanently "etch" or damage the plastic cover. Just like you should do for the paint finish of your car. There is not much else you can (or should) do.

Good luck. :beerchug:

Greeting everyone.

I just recently bought a 2008 Fusion SE and was wondering the same thing. I use 303 Aerospace Protectant spray on the clear vinyl windows of my popup camper. It protects plastics from UV degredation (think of it as sunblock for plastic/vinyl). I was thinking of using it on the clear plastic covers of the Fusions's head and tail lights to protect them too. Is the consensus among owners here that this is unecessary? Anybody ask a Ford service representative or body shop expert?

Hi Scoobmaster. :D If the protectant does not affect the clarity/optics of the headlight lens (due to smearing etc.), then there would be no harm in using it.

Good luck. :beerchug:
