George1419 Report post Posted October 30, 2021 Hey- my car makes a weird noise when the car is moved out of park. For example when u pull out of my drive way mad out it I. Reverse, this weird noise kicks in. It sounds like church noise lol. i can’t explain it it’s like church bells mixed with Halloween music lol. If I move the car to drive this noise stays. If u put car in park noise goes away. thoughts?
billford Report post Posted October 30, 2021 (edited) Probably something to do with this: NHTSA requires quiet electric, hybrid vehicles to make noise starting in 2019 - Repairer Driven NewsRepairer Driven News U.S. finalizes long-delayed 'quiet cars' rule, extending deadline | Reuters Edited October 30, 2021 by billford
Cobra348 Report post Posted October 31, 2021 Doubtful. It's more raspy and annoyingly pitched.BUT - that said, if it is the quiet motor warning, it will be on in any gear except Park until a speed of 20 MPH is reached. At that time it goes away. Soooo, good way to test this noise is get up to something over 20 and if it goes away then that's probably it and I have egg on my face.
George1419 Report post Posted November 2, 2021 Yea it’s raspy and annoying I understanding all the other noises these cars make but this one is different that it does it only during reverse or drive. And it’s sounds like a church music lol
Waldo Report post Posted November 2, 2021 Yep, sounds like the "sounder" for pedestrian protection. From the workshop manual: Due to the quiet nature of vehicles operating in electric mode, pedestrians may not be aware of the presence and operation of the vehicle, creating a risk for injury. The pedestrian alert system provides an audible sound from front and rear mounted speakers to alert of a vehicle approaching in forward or reverse at vehicle speeds between 0-30 km/h (0-8 mph). I've often described it as the "haunted ice cream truck sound". My neighbors have an Audi e-tron and that thing has a very unique sound, it sounds very sporty but it's quite loud. I can always tell when it's coming, even before I see it.
Cobra348 Report post Posted November 3, 2021 The 2020 FFH owners manual (Page 50) reads "Due to the quiet operation of hybrid and electric vehicles at low speeds, the system creates a subtle sound to alert pedestrians. The system is on when your vehicle is running and not in park (P). Some sound may be audible in the passenger compartment." Waldo, I can tell you from actual experience, the dropoff speed on a '20 is 20 MPH. Forward or reverse, that's the speed where the noise stops. And it's annoying as hell. Waldo Report post Posted November 3, 2021 (edited) Must be a typo in the shop manual, because 30kph is a lot closer to 20mph than 8mph. The Mach-E and Maverick shop manuals say 0-18mph, so guess they missed the 1. Edited November 3, 2021 by Waldo
Cobra348 Report post Posted November 3, 2021 Allowing for inexact reading of speed by 2 drivers (me and the chase car) I'll take 18 MPH.
