"Deep Sleep Mode Activated" message

Hello All,

Had a beautiful Silver 2012 FFH that I put 100,000 miles on in a little under 5 years...

It was very good to me in those 5 years except for some small issues that were covered under the

5 year 100,000 mile warranty..Started to get the itch for a 2017 FFH Platinum..Went to dealer where we

purchased over 20 cars & trucks ( other family members ) in the last 25 years on Friday 1/20/17...Drove

home with a Shadow Black 2017 FFH Platinum and a smile ... :) ...

 

Three days later went to unlock car using keypad on drivers door and no joy...Would not light up ..nothing.

Stopped by dealer on way home from work and had service manager look at it and they ordered keypad.

Dropped car off and they had it overnight...all fixed the next day.....

 

Then last Friday checked my Ford Pass App and had message "DEEP SLEEP MODE ACTIVATED"..

The message said that the car will go into this mode after 14 days if not used to save battery life..

To take it out of this mode you must go and do a manual start...So I went and started it manually and it started...

I called the dealer and they said they will check with Hybrid tech and get back to me...I also called for assistance

on the Ford Pass app and they said they will have a Tech call me back after 2 business days ...

Well I go visit my 86 year old mother on Monday nights and then go to work from there at 04:15 in the morning...

So i go out this morning and nothing....Dead as a door nail... Checked my ford pass app and had the message again...

Had to call the 1-800 number for assist and I was an hour late for work...Pissed me off that car with 2000 miles is dead andnothing was left on in car...Then deal with a--holes at work breaking my b--ls that my car is sleeping...starting to regret purchase..

Has anyone else had thie issue...sorry this is so long, just venting

Deep sleep mode activates when the 12 volt battery gets too low. There are lots of microprocessors in the car that are always on. Lots of short trips or sitting for several days doesn't provide enough time for the DC to DC converter to charge the 12 volt battery.

 

I carry a 12 volt 7 AH gel cell battery in my glove compartment along with a jumper cable made from 16 gauge wire to activate the car if the battery gets too low using the jumper points under the hood.

 

You may not know that the car doesn't have a starter motor or an alternator. The engine is started by one of the electric motors and the DC to DC converter serves the same purpose as an alternator except it works even when the engine is not running.

Hey Murph, Thanks for the response..I just feel that I should not have to ride around with a portable battery pack to jumpstart my car after be idle for 9 hours..

I looked at the Ford Fusion sport forum and there are over 98 pages on this issue..I also noticed some of the things that they had I also had,

like when i was driving to work i notice in the screen that it wanted to eject a cd disc, and other weird things..Just a question, did you get the Deep sleep mode and

did you have a dead battery? thx Dan

I used to get low battery warnings all the time before I replaced the wet cell lead acid battery with an AGM battery. That wasn't easy since I had to use a saw to cut the back off of the battery tray. AGM batteries maintain their voltage to a much lower charge level than wet cell lead acid batteries do. This problem is going to exist in any modern car that is loaded with microprocessors. Even with the AGM battery I have to charge it if I don't drive the car for a week.

Get the dealer to replace the 12 vdc battery under warranty. It happens often with Ford hybrids that the 12 vdc battery goes bad while the car's waiting to be sold. Recharging it won't work. You've already done that when the car was running. It needs a new 12 vdc.

RUN to a lawyer and try to return the car (you can't in FL legally). If the dealer is as wonderful as you claim, maybe you won't need a lawyer.

 

FL has a Lemon Law. I would immediately work with your dealer to start documentation for your state's Lemon Law. It's Ford, not the dealer who pays. Get their service manager to enter EVERYTHING you say, they say, what was done, etc.

 

I hope you work things out but it costs nothing to be prepared. Good luck.

Dropped car at dealer after work last night and they had a loaner car waiting and they parked my car in garage

so they can work on it this morning...This morning at work I received the Deep Sleep Mode Activated again

on my Ford Pass app on my phone...Hope they go and find a dead battery ...

As far as lemon law in NJ you have to give them every chance to make it right to a certain point..

I already told them I will keep returning it until they get it right...and it is all documented..

Also I never had any battery issues with my 2010 FFH in 5 years and 100,000 miles

Plus it only has 2038 miles on it so they still have 98,000 miles to get it right under warranty...LOl

I suppose it is possible things could reach the point where that might necessary but it is very premature at this point. Since you purchased the car off the lot it is possible it has been sitting on the lot for several months without the battery being charged except for short test drives. See how things go after you get a new battery as lolder suggested.

A wet cell lead acid battery can be permanently damaged by being completely discharged just once. IMHO it is the wrong battery for the car. It should have been an AGM battery. That's what I put in mine about 5 months after I bought the car in 2013.

Actually it all started last week when i got a message on the screen "system off to save battery" with a blue bar below it. When the car started there was not sound coming out of audio, nav.... Dealer said it wall all fixed after doing a "hard reboot". One week later (yesterday) i took the car to my office garage on the second floor. Return 3 hours later to go home and walk dog, went to car and the auto door unlock when pulling the handle did not work. Had to use the fob to get in. The speedo screen was blank. The center screen was on and off gray then blank. The rotary gear selector light was blinking and of course the car would not start. Call the Ford towing service which was trying to get a tow truck on the second floor of a low clearance garage. I went back to car 2 hours later just before the tow truck came and the car was working fine again. Drove the car to the street and had it towed from there. The car is at dealer and I'm waiting to find out what is going on with my 2 month old, 2017, 1,300 mile FFH Platinum:(

Sounds like the 2017 Ford Fusion Sports are having a rash of these problems.

Most if not all Fusions are made in Hermosillo, Mex. After manufacture they may sit in a lot awaiting rail transport for an indefinite period of time only driven a few minutes to rail cars. Transport might take days or weeks followed by weeks or months on dealers lots where they may not be regularly run for at least 1/2 hour per month. The 12 vdc batteries discharge to low enough levels to damage them and the car then continues to have battery problems. The batteries recharge but are damaged and have only a fraction of their normal capacity which is not enough to maintain the electrical loads still present when the car is off. Testing them with a normal battery tester will not reveal the damage and the only alternative is to replace the battery. Replacement OEM batteries have a much better record. The owners guide recommends running the car ( "on" ) 1/2 hour each month to keep the 12 vdc battery charged. The HVB can be recharged in several minutes.

I can't find it in the Owners Guide now either. It does say to run the car 10 minutes each month to charge the HVB and that that is not enough to charge the 12 vdc and to disconnect the negative terminal if the car is to sit more than 31 days. Running it 30 minutes should be enough.

Hello all

Update to original post. Dealer replaced 12v battery under warranty... Almost two weeks later (today) 3/11/17 woke up and had the dreaded

"Deep sleep mode activated" on my phone from the ford pass app.. tried auto start from app,no joy...went out to car and it was DEAD as a door nail once again..

Called dealer at 8 am and they sent someone over to jump start car..( after last no start , I purchased a JNC770r jump starter to lug 18 pounds in trunk to start this piece of shit)

So I'm not late for work again. Sorry just venting...dealer gave me a 2017 and fusion to use ...I told them I don't want the car back till it's fixed...Will update all when I hear something... Hey rjrfusion,I see you live in Jersey...Can you message me what dealer you use , and everyone else with this issue please message me...thx Dan

I went to the place i purchased the car which is All American in Hackensack. The service guy I worked with filling out the forms was Alan. Very nice and helpful. I took pictures of the screen with the message on it and showed him. Also showed him the sleep mode message on the app. They gave me a loaner car for the weekend and had the battery replaced by end of day Monday. Picked the car up this past Tuesday and so far so good. Don't go to the Steven's Ford in Jersey City. They have just taken over the dealership after years of problems.

Yes,I use All American in Point Pleasant, that's where I live...Before them it was a Weisleader Ford<Lincoln Mazda..We have been buying cars there

since 1991...A lot of cars were purchased through out the years there so I have a very good relationship with them...

I am glad to hear that they replaced your battery. They replaced mine so be aware that maybe within 2 weeks it could be dead again. It sucks that I have to lug around an 18 pound jump and carry battery jumper just in case......rj can I ask you a favor...When it is dark out and you lock the car with the key fob, can you look in thru window and see if the round wheel shifter where you put car in park, or drive and see if the "P" is illuminated...When I get to work at Newark airport in the morning its still dark out and I noticed when I locked the car I would look inside car to make sure everything is off...This is when I noticed the "P" on the wheel shifter still illuminated...Just trying to narrow some stuff down...Just shy of three months I have the car and its been in the shop 3 times now... ;(...Hopefully they find a fix , really don't want to go down the Lemon Law road...Thx Dan

Plan on a two week vacation this fall, sans car, and not sure how to prepare. Two hybrids here, and the older one (a 10 year old Camry) even says in the manual that it shuts off after two weeks!

 

Somewhere I read (sorry, don't remember source) that the #1 failure across all new cars of all makes has been the battery. With all the electronics we are not alone.

Connect a battery maintainer or a regular charger that has a maintenance mode to the 12 volt battery terminals under the hood. The car will be happy which means that you will be happy.

When i walk the dog during evening hours I will lock and look. Will get back to you in few days since we may get a ton of snow and possible blizzard up here in JC. I think you are getting snow minus the blizzard.

 

Hoping I don't have the reoccurring issue. I read in the forum that since I typically use the car during the week going 2-4 miles a day the battery does not get a chance to charge. Makes no sense. I love the car minus this problem. Went to Mt. Laurel yesterday and today for my son's hockey games and got an average 40.5mpg.

That's enough to keep both batteries charged. That's probably 10 minutes a day or 50 minutes a week. The minimum is 30 minutes a month.

UPDATE!!!!

Just picked up car from dealer...Here is what they did...

 

Performed parasitic draw test--none found at this time.

Checked Oasis and found SSM 46433& 46128.

Reprogram ACM

Reprogram DDM

Let vehicle sit for two days outside--vehicle starts and shows no sign of a draw.

 

Basically they did some updates...We ill see what happens... Wish me luck...lol
