help me understand my hybrid fuel consumption

Recommended Posts

Good day ,

I have a Fusion Hybrid SE 2013. Since the beginning i am having a hard time understanding the fuel consumption and i hope you can help me out on this.

The way i understand it is that whenever i am driving on EV mode i am not taking any fuel ami right ?

So lets take this morning , did a 8.8 kilometer trip to test it out. i was on EV for 6.6 KM so to my understanding i ony drove 2.2KM with the ICE

still the computer says that i used 0.4 litre of fuel which to me if i do a quick math would add up to 18 litre of fuel for a 100 km trip

still the computer said i was doing 3.2 l /100km

My dealer is telling me that i just don't understand how a Hybrid work.............but he is unable to explain it to me

So what is it that i do not comprehend correctly regarding fuel economy on a HYbrid ??

Thanks for your help

Alain

The ICE was on for 2.2 km, working to charge the HVB to provide energy for the 6.6 km that were with the ICE off. Your 0.4 L of fuel consumption must be spread out over the entire 8.8 km trip because gasoline is the only source of power for your car.

Hi Alain,

When your turn the car off, the L/KM shown is for your last trip only. As your trips are not all equal, you can't transfer those stats on 100km. You can see the overall (all time) L/KM while running the car in you left screen. You can also reset it by holding the ''ok'' button on your steering.

ok thanks for that explanation but still i just don't understand the fuel use vs the number of kilometer using ice vs EV using 0.4 l of gas on a 2 kilometer trip (when ice was on) just doesn't compute

so basically then the car consume gas even on EV mode ??

No. All of the energy in the battery can be traced back to burning gasoline. When the ICE is running in addition to moving the car it is charging the battery. Even energy that got into the battery from regeneration is a result of burning gasoline to go up the hill in the first place.

For some reason, I can't comprehend any of this when the metric system is used!

LOL! Me either... ;)

Your car moved 8.8 km and used 0.4 l of fuel, that's it...nothing magic.

If you look at it in the ("correct") imperial unit system miles per gallon is how many miles you traveled divided by how many gallons of fuel you used.

The way i understand it is that whenever i am driving on EV mode i am not taking any fuel ami right ?

So lets take this morning , did a 8.8 kilometer (5.5 miles) trip to test it out. i was on EV for 6.6 KM (4.1 miles) so to my understanding i ony drove 2.2KM (1.4 miles) with the ICE

still the computer says that i used 0.4 litre (0.1 gallons) of fuel which to me if i do a quick math would add up to 18 litre (4.8 gallons) of fuel for a 100 km (62.1 miles) trip (13 miles per gallon)

still the computer said i was doing 3.2 l /100km (74 mpg)

(added quick googlefied conversions)

When your FFH displays the mileage (l/100km or mpg) it is showing it for the entire trip, not just for when the ICE was running. On the right side of your dash you should have a fuel history that displays a graph of your instant mileage. I have no idea what the scale would be in l/100km but in mpg it goes from 0 to 60. When the ICE is running I normally get between 10 mpg (when the ICE is working hard) to 30 or 40 mpg. But when the ICE shuts off and you are running on the battery it will go all the way to the top. My instant mpg is actually infinity as I am using 0 fuel for several miles.

The computer adds all of this up and gives you a total mileage at the end of your trip. Not just the mileage for when the ICE was running. The actual mileage for when the ICE runs will always look 'low' because as others have said here it is propelling your car down the road AND charging the battery.

IF i did that conversion right, 74 mpg is a pretty damn good mileage!

Ah, makes so much more sense! Thanks CCalvinN!

Alain, you're actually doing just fine. Ignore the EV and non-EV miles and just consider the total distance traveled, with considerably less fuel usage than a conventional ICE-only vehicle. So, the car is doing its job, but the logic behind your math was a little off. Enjoy your new ride!

Btw, Alain, since your one sample was a relatively short trip, you really shouldn't try to extrapolate the results to a longer trip. Some trips will be better and some will be worse. The longer you drive it, the more you'll understand it.

You may say it indirectly consumes fuel in EV mode, even though the engine is not running. EV mode is not free, it must be paid for.

As others said, look at the total mileage and the total amount of fuel used.

It doesn't consume fuel while in EV mode but the electricity was produced by burning fuel. If you drive a mile with the ICE on and get 30 mpg and then drive a mile in EV, the mpg for the two miles is 60 mpg. That is equal to 7.8L/Km and 3.9L/Km

Ahhh ok thanks for explaining

Thank you all for your patience and the explanation ...now i understand better

The metric system is all a socialist commie plot and 2.54 is a satanic number. Give me furlongs, rods, acres and gallons anytime. 5280 is a godly number as is 6076.
