GrySql Report post Posted August 27, 2015 When a person is over the age of 70 in CA they want to see you before issuing another DL, they even want you to prove you know what you're doing by making that person take a written test - A TEST! I haven't taken a DMV Driver's License test in over 15 years, they would just mail me a new DL every 5 years with an amount to pay included, great. Maybe they just forgot about me but I liked the way it was going. That picture on the never ending license had no resemblance to my present appearance however. Unhappily, the DMV computers finally found me, the address was wrong on the renewal letter but my crafty mail carrier knows me and delivered it anyway. I think it's elder abuse but somehow I passed the test and then they used that 'House of Mirrors' camera to take a new picture for the new DL, I think the camera guy purposely waits until you drool or blink before they snap the perfect jailhouse arrest photo to go on your license.Anyway, I am once again running amok on the busiest freeways in the world... Plus, my new picture on the holographic license makes me look more like I really do, a zombie - swell. 2 jeff_h and hybridbear reacted to this

murphy Report post Posted August 27, 2015 PA driver's licenses are good for 4 years. A new picture is required for every license renewal. A photo card comes in the mail which must be taken to a Driver's License Photo Center which is usually co-located with a State Police station. A picture is taken and the machine spits out the new plastic license with the picture and all of your data embedded inside of the plastic in about 15 minutes. They punch a hole in the old license to invalidate it. 1 GrySql reacted to this

The service centers are run by each individual county, so each one is different. Then you complete the paper form with all your info, even if it's the same as your expiring license you have to fill out the entire form again. They then check your eyesight & take a pic. Once the pic is done you pay the fee, about $30, and they invalidate your existing license by clipping a corner. You are then given the third layer of the form you filled out as your temporary license to carry around with your clipped license. The other two copies of the form are kept by the county to go to the state. Then in about 3 weeks to a month you get your new license by mail. Our licenses are valid for 4 years, with the exception of drivers under 21. If you get your license before you're 18 it's only valid until you turn 18. And then the new one is only valid until you turn 21. The license process here is much more efficient than the car title process. When you buy a car it often takes 3-6 months to get your title from the MN DVS. They're very slow...I think it's elder abuse but somehow I passed the test and then they used that 'House of Mirrors' camera to take a new picture for the new DL, I think the camera guy purposely waits until you drool or blink before they snap the perfect jailhouse arrest photo to go on your license. So, where's the picture? ;) :camera: When a person is over the age of 70 in CA they want to see you before issuing another DL, they even want you to prove you know what you're doing by making that person take a written test - A TEST! But, I do understand the desire to test older drivers to ensure that they're safe. When our first Light Rail line opened in the mid-2000s, the first fatal accident was an elderly gentleman who was drove around the crossing arms & was struck by a Light Rail train doing almost 55 MPH. After the accident, his family said that they had been trying for months to get him to stop driving because they knew he was no longer safe to drive, but he refused to give up his keys. My parents are in their early 70s now & I have noticed a deterioration in their driving skills over the last 5 years. They both are much more prone to step hard on the brakes in situations when it is unnecessary. By that time I will most certainly be over 70 (I'm 67 now) so I will see what NY has up its sleeve for little ole me. I wouldn't sweat the ordeal you went though UNLESS it becomes a renewal occurrence then I'd seriously gripe and consider moving to somewhere more Senior-friendly (Fiji, Costa Rica, Tahiti?). And I LIKE that bumper car! Reminds me of a Hudson Terraplane I once rode in! 1 GrySql reacted to this

When they took my picture the guy asked if I wanted him a retake and I told him no, it's not going to get any prettier. The lady in front of me asked for 4 retakes. 1 GrySql reacted to this

corncobs Report post Posted August 27, 2015 In IL you get a new license send by mail before the old one expires but only if you have been good driver the previous 5 years. (like my wife) Otherwise it's a trip to the DMV vision test, new picture and $10 and you walk out with a new card in your hand. I believe if you have glasses on your license you always have to go to for the vision test. (like me) 2 GrySql and hybridbear reacted to this
talmy Report post Posted August 27, 2015 Here they are good for 8 years. I think I had to do an eye test last time, but I don't think anyone has to retake the written test. My father, who passed away at 89, never took a driving test in his life. When he first started driving in the 1930's there was no test. Then every time he moved (living in three different states) he didn't have to retest. I've had a less fortunate route, with driving tests (behind the wheel and written) in all three states I've lived in. ;( 1 GrySql reacted to this
aschulz261 Report post Posted August 27, 2015 I can tell you that in Nevada, because I drive with hand controls, every 4 years I have to take the written AND driving test. When is the last time that anyone on this board to take the driving test? And you think old age is discriminatory..... 1 GrySql reacted to this
murphy Report post Posted August 27, 2015 The last time I took the driver's test was when I got my first license. That was a very long time ago. 1 GrySql reacted to this
nv rick Report post Posted August 28, 2015 Don't know about driving tests when older. But here in NV, the license is good for four years, (although my daughter's is good for eight years for some reason--maybe because I'm 68 years old). After four years, you can renew on line. After the next four years, you have to go to the DMV for an eye test. When I hit 72 for my next renewal, I really don't know what to expect. 2 corncobs and GrySql reacted to this
