If you want to carry all your digital music with you there is an easy way to do it! I have over 8000 songs on a 64GB Thumb Drive that is plugged into the USB port in my center console cubby! Here's how it works and some tips I have found . . . 1) Buy a good quality (brand name) USB flash drive large enough to support you library. In fact make it considerably larger to be able to add to it later AND to help with indexing (I'll explain more on this later). Buy one with a fast transfer rate. 2) DO NOT USE FOLDERS! It will not work. Simply load all the songs you want into the root drive of the USB thumb drive. Song titles, Artist, Album selections, Album Art will all be visible when viewed on your touch screen, as they would on your iPod. To play back just select the appropriate USB 1 or 2 on the touch screen, as determined by where you plugged the drive in. 3) My 64GB thumb drive with over 8000 songs (yes there was room for much more!) took about 2 hours for the onboard computer to index! You can start playing music from it in about 2-3 minutes though you will not be able to jump around. It will only play sequentially until it is fully indexed. You can move forward or backwards though. And each time you jump, you will be able to see how many songs have already been indexed so far. It will not need to re-index each time you start the car. 4) Removing or plugging in the thumb drive while the car is switched on will cause the thumb drive to need to be re-indexed the next time you plug it in! Make sure you leave it in until you turn the car off, and plug it back in before you switch the car on again. 5) I had occasional hiccups with the system that would cause it to start the re-indexing process. This annoyance is mostly avoided by following the above guidance, but not completely. It's a pain when it does this. To speed up indexing, you may want to consider putting less music on the thumb drive. When I reduced the number of songs to about 3500, indexing greatly sped up and was completed in about 10 minutes! Having extra room on the drive also speeds up indexing. You may want to consider smaller thumb drives. Just make sure you leave some space to add on and to allow for faster indexing. ROCK ON! ~Wailer

We took delivery of my wife's 2013 HyTi on July 12. We use an 8000+ song iPod classic with it. For some inexplicable reason, Sync is constantly "indexing it." I thought that it would take a couple of weeks of driving for Ford to build up an index and a command list, but after that, provided none of the songs changed, it wouldn't need to keep indexing. That hasn't turned out to be the case. It seems it builds an index every time we start the car, and with that many songs, you have to drive for a couple of hours before it completes. I would think it would only need to do that when it found new files. Is anyone using an iPod with a large library? Are you seeing the same "Indexing" or "building commands" prompts every time you start the car? Will this ever subside? Thanks!

About two weeks ago, I bought a 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid. It has lots of options, including SYNC with voice-activated navigation, Sony sound system, heated seats, BLIS package, etc. So far, I'm fairly pleased with the car, except for the iPod integration. It's driving me crazy. I've read lots of complaints all over the Internet and tried many fixes. When I got the car, I upgraded the GEN 1 SYNC system the latest software available - 3.2.2 according to syncmyride.com. Here's some of the things I'm dealing with: iPod library of ~7500 songs5th gen iPod Classic (160GB) running latest softwareReindexing every time I start the car (only last maybe 20-30 seconds, but still annoying. Every time?!)Once it's done indexing, sometime it starts playing, other times it takes upwards of 2-3 minutes to start playing where it left offIf I'm shuffling an artist, it leaves off on song x of whatever, then when I come back and start the car, it starts playing that same song, except it's now 1 of whatever, so it's reshufflingI've had it tell me the device isn't supportedI've had it tell me voice commands aren't available on this device.I usually leave the iPod plugged in. It sits in my center console, and I only take it out once in a while to adjust playlists or add songs. The behavior is extremely inconsistent. I've tried the following fixes: Master Reset of SYNCPulling the fuse for SYNCRestoring iPodResetting iPodSlimming iPod down to ~2000 songsI've had decent results with just a USB stick, but I need to spend more time with that to see how it behaves. However, that presents its own issues (library/playlist management, protected content). I'm really fed up with this system. I used aux in in my old truck, and I spent a lot of time looking at cars, and wanted one with touch screen and iPod integration. I feel like I'm not getting what I paid for. Is Ford/Microsoft continuing to support GEN 1 SYNC? Will there be more updates, or are us older owners left out in the cold? I'm hearing mixed reports about MFT as well. If only I could go back and buy a different car...

Okay, after playing with things, I finally have MFT 3.5.1 working with my iPod touch for bluetooth music and my SGS3 for phone connections. Here's what I did: Under Phone:Added a phone as the primary connection (911 setup, voicemail, etc.)Clicked on my phone in the Bluetooth screen and under info, unselect BT StereoUnder Entertainment:Scroll to BluetoothClick add a deviceAdded the iPod TouchSaid no to the favorite/primary phone prompt (Yes even though this is an iPod touch MFT believes it is a phone.)Start playing musicUnder Phone:Go to settingsGo to BluetoothClick on the phone and connect If done correctly, you'll see two blue sync icons, one next to the iPod, one next to your phone. You can turn off your car and turn it back on, it'll reconnect correctly. ------------------ That said, here's the down side. In my testing, after turning the car off and back on, the audio started skipping from my iPod. Seems this is a known problem with audio streaming via Bluetooth. When I first connected there wasn't any skipping, so it is possible. My next task: Getting the SGS3 to display test messages. The SGS3 supports MAP, it even gets the request from the car, but won't display the results. I haven't figured out why yet.
