I thought the 2015-2016 Ford Wrecker Towing Manual had some interesting info for the Tow Truck operators.

In the event of damage or fire involving an Electric Vehicle (EV) or Hybrid-Electric Vehicle (HEV):

• Always assume the high voltage (HV) battery and associated components are energized and

  fully charged

• Exposed electrical components, orange HV cables/wires and HV batteries present potential

  HV shock hazards

• Venting/off-gassing of HV lithium ion battery vapors are potentially toxic and flammable

• There is a potential for delayed fire or delayed release of toxic and/or flammable gases with

  lithium-ion batteries
  Vehicle Shutdown and HV System Disabling

  • Advise your dispatcher and all other responders that an electric or hybrid-electric vehicle is involved.

  • Always approach the vehicle from the sides to stay out of potential travel path. It may be difficult

    to determine if the vehicle is running due to lack of engine noise.

  • Place vehicle into P (Park), set the parking brake, turn the vehicle off, activate hazard lights, and

    remove keys to a distance at least 16 feet from the vehicle until loading the vehicle for transport.

  • If you detect leaking fluids, sparks, smoke, flames, increased temperature, gurgling, popping or

    hissing noises from the HV battery compartment, ventilate the passenger area and call 911.

Parking Brake - Overview
The parking brake system uses 2 switch activated, Electronic Control Unit (ECU) controlled motors to apply and release the rear brake calipers. The ABS module controls and monitors the parking brake system and sets Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) when a fault is present in the system. The IPC illuminates the parking brake warning indicator and displays a message in the message center when a fault is present, when the parking brakes are applied and when they are released.
Parking Brake and Actuation
The ABS module monitors and controls the parking brake system. The ABS module sends a reference voltage to the parking brake switch. When the driver moves the parking brake switch to the APPLY position, the reference voltage is sent back to the ABS module indicating an APPLY request. The ABS module then determines from sensor inputs if the parking brakes can be applied and sends voltage to the parking brake actuator motors. Once the parking brakes are fully applied, the ABS module sends a message to the IPC which illuminates the red BRAKE warning indicator. If the red BRAKE warning indicator is already illuminated due to a non-parking brake concern, the IPC displays PARK BRAKE APPLIED in the message center. When the driver moves the parking brake switch to the RELEASE position, the reference voltage is sent back to the ABS module indicating a RELEASE request. The ABS module then determines from sensor inputs and CAN messages (ignition state and brake pedal input) if the parking brakes can be released and sends voltage to the parking brake actuator motors. Once the parking brakes are fully released, the ABS module sends a message to the IPC which extinguishes the red BRAKE warning indicator. If the red BRAKE warning indicator cannot be extinguished due to a non-parking brake concern, the IPC displays PARK BRAKE RELEASED in the message center.
Automatic Release
The parking brake is designed to automatically release under the following circumstances:
• the driver door must be closed.
• the driver safety belt must be fastened.
• the engine must be running or the green Ready-to-Drive indicator must be illuminated.
• the transmission must be in any forward gear or REVERSE.
Once all the conditions have been met, the parking brake releases automatically when the accelerator pedal is pressed. A vehicle driving away up an incline requires more accelerator pedal input than a vehicle driving away down an incline.

Component Description:
Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module
The ABS module is attached directly to the HCU and is the electronic control unit for the parking brake system. The ABS module monitors all switch inputs, sensor inputs and HS-CAN messages that relate to the parking brake system, then directly controls the parking brake actuator motors. The ABS module also sets Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in the event that a system or component failure should occur. 


Parking Brake Actuator Motor
The parking brake actuator motors are single speed reversible electric motors mounted on the rear brake calipers. The motors can be serviced separately from the calipers.
Parking Brake Switch
The parking brake switch is a 3 position switch with 2 sets of 3 internal micro switches, one set is for APPLY and one set is for RELEASE. The 3 switch positions are APPLY (pulled up), NEUTRAL (at rest or static) and RELEASE (pushed down).

Hey! I see that even though it is a microscopic font size :detective:

 

This is a great topic choice, GrySql. When I first learned that our FFHs had these electric emergency brakes my first concern was how reliable and trouble free are they going to be. The "old fashioned" hand (or foot) operated cable system had their own set of problems especially in geographic regions where winter road salt can lead to corrosion of the emergency brake cables. I have had to replace/repair these cable systems on multiple cars. I vaguely remember Waldo pointing this out in a thread somewhere. Time will tell if these "new fashioned" brake systems prove reliable.

 

But, I am left wondering if there is a way to manually override this system and release the emergency brake in the event of a failure? Waldo, what do we do if the brakes break when the brakes are applied?

I have grown to really like the electronic parking brake. It would be even better if it were automatic. I find it interesting that our cars with the eCVT have the equivalent of a parking pawl that is engaged when shifting to Park with the gear selector. Even the Focus Electric has a way that the "transmission" is locked when in Park. Tesla's don't have anything like that, their cars just automatically engage the Parking Brake when shifting into Park. They don't have a separate Parking Brake switch. I wonder if other EVs will be designed that way in the future.

 

Waldo, what do we do if the brakes break when the brakes are applied?

the noticeable time lag from when you turn the key to the "ready to drive" message.

I see about a two second lag before the message appears, BUT the car is ready to drive nearly instantaneously after I turn the key (before the message appears).
