Stop safely NOW

Recommended Posts

Take a deep breath.  I'm not from Ford but if the dealer didn't find anything then it could be just another one of those gremlins that never reappear.  Mine MAY have been related to my putting the electronic parking brake when it was rolled up too much on a sloped parking space concrete bump stop.  I may not have turned off/disengaged the electric parking brake correctly or something.  Never had the problem come back *knock on wood*.  It was also after a long highway journey.   I subsequently took a far longer highway journey a year or two later and the problem never re-occurred. Hope you can find the solution.  If you want to try and fix it yourself you'll have to do more digging.  Ask the 2012 FFH board.  I know exactly where the ECU/PCM is in my old car and have taken it out and removed it, put a chip on it and reinstalled it.  It is in front of the center console under the radio.  I do not know where it is in the 2012 FFH but they are only about $60 to $70 on ebay. here ECU for 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid

If it is the PSCM - Power Steering Control Module then do you notice any problems with the power steering?  Dealers make their money off of freaking you the f out and ripping you off and threaten things like "engine tear down" when they know damn well what is wrong with just a quick inspection.  See if AAA can recommend a reputable mechanic who works on Ford Hybrids.  If you get a AAA membership you're entitled to free inspections.

BTW Recalls do not have a warranty limit and the dealer has to replace it at no cost by law.  If they don't you can phone Ford first then the authorities if you do not receive satisfaction.  I'd wait to see if you experience any further problems.  Hopefully your maintenance is up to date.

I'd agree, no need to panic just yet.  Could just be a one time glitch in the electronics.  It is unlikely to be the PSCM, if that had a problem you would get a different set of error messages and it wouldn't cause the lack of power.  The "Stop safely now" is usually specific to some of the hybrid components.  Without any codes, there really isn't much you can do, other than wait and see if it happens again, and try to find some common patterns.

As for the PSCM, it's not a recall, it's a customer satisfaction program, so the laws that apply to recalls don't apply here.  But generally the idea is that if it hasn't gone bad in 10 years, then it's very unlikely yours has the defect that the program was meant to address.

lol, all the warnings make you believe the car has been totaled.
I would definitely have the 12V battery checked out.

Also high miles may indicate a faulty high voltage battery cell, so a battery reconditioning or replacement may help.
Reconditioning should cost less than $1k (usually $700) at the dealer, and should enable your battery to last another 100k miles easily.

But if your car is fairly new, and has low miles, it may not need a battery reconditioning.

Thanks for all the replies.  All maintenance is up to date and I am the original owner.  Car has only 70K miles and I've never had this "STOP SAFELY NOW" issue before a couple of weeks ago, but it's happened multiple times since first occurrence.

Hoping that this doesn't involve the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM), the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), or the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM).  Not seeing any issues with the 12V battery or the high voltage EV battery and not having any issues or noticing anything new/different/strange with the steering, so I do not think any of those are the root cause of the problem.  It's at the dealer now and they are going to check it over.  I've asked them to specifically check that there is nothing wrong with the EVAP purge valve/canister.  If that's the issue, it should not be an expensive repair, but I'm worried about availability of parts with all the supply chain issues happening now.

I really hate NOT having a car right now.  And more importantly, I hate not having confidence that I can rely on my FFH when I do get it back from the dealer.  I certainly will not be taking it only any long road trips out of town.

HELP !?!?!?!?!?! ......... Requesting help from someone at FORD to help me resolve this issue please!  I have a 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid and received the "STOP SAFELY NOW" message for the first time ever on 18NOV21 during highway driving at 65-70mph.  The message appeared along the left hand side of my primary instrument display.  When the message appeared, the car immediately began to lose power, although it seemed like I was getting some assist from the EV battery as my speed dropped.  Fortunately, I was able exit the highway and pull into a parking lot.  I turned the vehicle off, Googled the SSN message and found this and other forums where various causes were being discussed.  I turned the car back on and was able to continue driving it back home without the message reappearing.

The next day, I took the car to my FORD dealer and they checked for any stored error codes which might help pinpoint the issue, but they found nothing.  Some of the posts indicated that the issue might be with the PCM (Power Control Module?) and others indicated that the issue required a software update.  My local dealer did review all recalls on this Fusion Hybrid model and found one related to the PSCM (Power Steering Control Module), saying that FORD offers a 1-time replacement at no cost within 10-years of 150K miles.  While I have only 69K miles on the car, it seems that I am about 3-month past the 10-year date.  The local dealer is telling me that if the PSCM replacement is needed, it is a $2000+ repair...... YIKES !!!!!!

Does anyone else have this issue and if so, how did you resolve it?  Can someone from FORD chime in to offer any assistance?  Seems so unfair that just 3-months past the 10-year cutoff means I'm facing a $2000+ repair bill for a vehicle that has been superbly well maintained and has not given me any other problems.  HELP !?!?!?!?!?!

Has anyone reached back to you, or what happened? I’ve had the “stop pull over” a few times it’s so scary.

Thanks for the shout-out!

I'm happy to look into how I can move this along. :) Just PM me your VIN, mileage, best daytime phone, full name, and dealer name/location.

Meagan, how can I contact you with my info? My 2019 Fusion  Titanium Hybrid had this “stop driving safely” message yesterday. Had it towed to a local auto shop and they asked me to have it towed to a Ford Dealership today.

Thanks!

So this looks very similar to the problem that I am experiencing.  I have a 2016 Fusion Hybrid SE.   we have had it for over a year.  Last summer we experienced the STOP SAFELY NOW message when stationary waiting in a drivethru line.  My son was driving so he got it pulled over and called a friend to pick him up.  When I got home we went to check it out.  No problem.  Car started and we drove it home.  Drove it very carefully the next few weeks, looking for anything, but nothing.  Then once again another warm day.  In another drive thru line and SSN message.  Got it pushed out of the way and checked everything.  No errors, No check engine light, nothing.  we decided to see if it would come back after letting it sit again.  3 hours later we went back and it was fine.   Took it to the dealer.  They could find nothing wrong.  No Codes or anything.  No problems the rest of the summer.   This year.  after temp started getting above 90, it happened again.   It happened just driving down the road, had to pull over.  After sitting for an hour, made it back home.  This is when we figure it was heat related.  If it was over 90, don't drive the fusion.  I checked the coolant for the electronics and made sure it was topped off.  It still occurs when over 90 and it will last about an hour of driving.  Took car back to dealer and they still cannot find anything wrong.  They have had it for over a month trying to figure out something.   Looking for any direction to see if I can get this fixed or sell it.

I have a 2012 lincoln MKZ - It is behaving the same way at speeds greater than 50mph.  It did it to me 5 times yesterday, I stayed in the right lane and when it occurred, I pulled into the breakdown lane, shut the vehicle off and then restarted it.  The engine was fine and the error was gone; I found through repeating this process the SSN error would occur immediate following what I beleieve was the transmission shifting to high gear.  The last time I noticed it I was doing approx 55mph and trying to accelerate.  I got off the highway and did back roads, max 45 for about 50 miles without issue.
Car is 2012, with 111k milles.   OBDC reader showed no errors but three possible unreleated ABS errors:  U3003, C0125 and C1B00.
I'm going to check the 12v battery and investigate the issue further.  Does anyone have any suggestions what else I can check before going to a dealer?

Driving in the middle lane of 6 lanes on I-95 in Baltimore yesterday I suddenly got the red flashing message, Stop Safely Now. As the message flashed the car lost power and the check engine light came on. I was able to get to the berm, turned the car off and restarted. I was able to drive the car to my appointment and home again.

When I returned to town last night I dropped it off at the dealer. This, I believe in the recall for the PCM. Since the recall came out I've checked with the dealer at least 6 times about getting recall work done, only to be repeatedly told, "we don't have the part." We will see how long this takes.

Hi everyone, just wanted to share my experience with this issue on my 2010. For me, the issue was a bad MECS pump. This is the pump that cools the hybrid system components in the engine bay (not the battery obviously). The dealership could not replicate my issue because it only happened when driving at highway speed for extended periods, and uphill in particular. All the symptoms are exactly the same as what has been described. The total cost to replace the pump at the dealer was about $500. If you do the job yourself, don't forget to bleed the system.

I replaced my MEC pump in my 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid and when I went to refill the coolant, it just stays in the reservoir; none goes down into the system. I cannot find any bleeder valves and nothing online. How to you bleed this system? (Nevermind, figured it out. (attached))

Can you give specifics on bleeding the system? How did you do it??
