FFH - What are Fair Discounts?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to buy a Ford Fusion Hybrid SE, but am unsure on what is a good discount to shoot for. I can negotiate effectively, but am less sure about what is achievable in terms of a discount. My credit union's car buying service did not get me the kind of price I had hoped, but maybe asking too much. The details...

2015 Ford Fusion SE Hybrid - $26890

Tech Package Option - $995

Destination - $825

TOTAL - $28710

Credit Union Discount - $1346

Ford Rebate Discount - $1500

TOTAL DISCOUNT - $2846

TOTAL CAR PRICE - $25864

% Off MSRP - 9.9 % (4.68% from credit union)

Opinions?

Phil

Take a look at TrueCar also to get a better idea on what to pay. This has helped me land a good price without feeling like I was ripped off. Once you get an agreement on the phone that the dealer will come to that, you then try to squeeze off a few more bucks during "negotiating". I also did the same for my trade in and got close to private selling with it if you include the tax break you get.

What's invoice price for that configuration? A good deal is getting to invoice price before Ford rebates.

TrueCar will tell you what invoice is for the exact configuration. Usually when I go car shopping (online) and have found something I want, I tell the salesman straight up to show me the invoice on the car and deal off the invoice price right away. I have had very good luck doing that. That being said, I once took a Truecar printout to the dealer to compare it to the invoice price and Truecar was right at $1000 less than invoice for the exact car he had on the lot. My salesman said he couldn't beat that.

I used cars.com and found locally (< 200 miles) available cars, then sorted by the lowest price. I then contacted those dealers (who listed their discounted price on-line) and negotiated with them from there.

I managed to get my car (MSRP $36300) out the door for $33187, or about $30163 after discount.
