Smog Test, what does your State require?

Recommended Posts

I was looking at a short Topic on the Energi Forum about this subject and it made me look up our Smog Test rules here in CA.

I wonder what other States require.

CA Smog Test Rules:

CA Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:
• Hybrid
• Gasoline powered 1975 year model or older
• Diesel powered 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs
• Electric
• Natural gas powered with a GVWR rating of more than 14,000 lbs.
• Motorcycle
• Trailer

I have asked myself that question before and now had a reason to look.

Also note that Illinois hybrids are not exempt. As explained by the Illinois Air Team, hybrids still create potential for emissions.

Really oddly they don't test diesel powered vehicles.

Illinois exempts two types of fuel-efficient vehicles from emissions testing for the purposes of first-time IL vehicle registration and registration renewal:

Diesel-powered vehicles.

Vehicles that run exclusively on electricity.

No testing by me.

Really? That's too funny! We live 20 miles apart but yet I have to go to the test. Go figure.

In Arizona:

Exemptions for:

  • vehicles newer than 5 years old
  • vehicles model year 1966 or older
  • electric powered
  • solar powered
  • hydrogen powered
  • motorcycles
  • vehicles designated as "collectible", meaning older than 15 years old AND has a collectible or classic automobile insurance coverage that restricts the collectible vehicle mileage and/or use (requires second car for normal use)

No inspections in Nye County NV. Seems that there is not enough pollution here to justify it. Not sure about other counties, but Clark County requires emission tests every year for registration.

Only the major metro areas in Texas require emission testing. Okay, they used to. I don't know for sure since in my area all that is required is an annual "safety" inspection.

• Trailer

Wow! Trailers don't have to be inspected? What's next, horse drawn carriages? LOL ;)

Methane from livestock is becoming an issue and it has become very difficult to start a new livestock operation, even out here in farm country.

But they don't make us test our cars or pick-ups here.

Maybe a Flatulence Test for the drivers is needed too. Just sayin'...

Well, Rick the NV DMV page has a link to a "Green Driver State Incentives in Nevada" page which, in part, says:

"The following eco-friendly vehicles are exempt from smog and emissions testing for Nevada vehicle registration and registration renewal:

Alternative fuel vehicles (AFV).

New hybrid electric vehicles (for the first 5 model years).

Newer model diesel vehicles and those with a gross vehicle weight is 14,001 pounds or more.*"

That's a little confusing! What does that mean? For the first 5 model years? Hmm.

It probably means that when the car reaches 6 years old it has to be tested. A model year is not the same as a calendar year since most models are introduced in September.

I think you're probably right. I bought and registered her in July of '14, so I shouldn't have to have a smog check until registration time in 2019, right? She won't actually "reach 6 years old" until 11/25/19 which would be 6 years from her build date. That's how I see it assuming that 2014 is her "1st model year".
