Drive side-view mirror and Rain-X question

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a new 2014 FFH Ti two weeks ago (upgraded from a 2010 FF Sport) and I have the auto-dimming/heated/blind spot indicator on the drivers side view mirror and wanted to see if putting Rain-X on this would have any adverse effects. I can't think it would, but I figured I would ask and see first before.

Thanks for the replies

I don't think so.

I have RainX window cleaner and usually clean my mirrors when cleaning the rest of the windows. I have not noted any change in operation after doing that.

Ohh almost forgot

Congrats and welcome to the FFH world.

I've heard of RainX but never used it. What advantages does it provide?

It basically creates a lotus effect on your windshield which helps with visibility.

It actually works so good that the rains just rolls off and don't even need the wipers. ;)

Does it "go away" and have to be reapplied every time you clean your windshield or wash your car?

No, but it's not permanent either. You apply it to your windshield, and it lets the rain roll off the windshield. You barely have to use the wipers unless it's a really bad rain. It lasts awhile, but does have to be reapplied regularly. But it takes like 5 minutes to apply, so it's not a big deal. And a small bottle is good for multiple applications.

Thanks, I'll get some tomorrow (Friday), Rain coming Saturday...

Question has been answered but just to add to it.

I have a bottle of RainX windshield cleaner which contains the water repellent as well.

On top of that I added a little bit of RainX to the windshield washer fluid to apply a small amount with every wash.

I have been using the RainX washer fliud additive. Mix with water per instructions and add to the windshield washer tank. Just squirt when you need to see. No smears just water rolling off. :love_shower:

I just bought both the regular Rain-X and the Rain-X washer fluid additive. I'll soon treat my windshield (and rear window; miss the rear window wiper that my prior wagon had) and also put the additive in the washer fluid tank. We'll see...

I put some Rain-X on my Fusion, but just a month later and it seems to be essentially "gone". I've never had that problem before, usually it lasts well over a year. I wonder if there's something about the Fusion's wipers that takes it off; it does seem to still work in the sections not covered by the wipers.

Also I once used the washer fluid additive in a previous car and it gummed up and plugged the pump. Could have been used-error somehow, but I stick to the true Rain-X washer fluid now.

I cleaned the windshield with Stoners Invisible Glass, then applied Rain-X as directed. Our rains have mostly been at night, but today it was lightly raining and I didn't really see much or any difference between the windshield now and without Rain-X. In the photos, #1 is at 60 mph and #2 is waiting at a traffic light.

Is that the way the windshield should look? If not, what might be the problem? Not letting it dry enough before buffing off the haze? Or?

Looks pretty good. It's rolling off nicely as far one can tell from a still picture.

Rain-X does what it advertises, in that it kind of acts like a wax for your window making the rain bead up nicely.

But I am personally not a very big fan of Rain-X, because it causes the rain to fly off of the windowshield so easily and so darn fast when pushed by the air speeding past the car that the motion of all that water streaking by sort of distracts me from being able to detect the motion of the other drivers, pedestrians, etc. which I am trying not to run into. The lines of the water streaking off of the window so fast also almost causes a vertigo feeling for me.

Edit add: I much prefer the motion of the windshield wipers to do the work of getting the water off of the windshield.

It was rolling off at 60 mph, not when standing still at the light. I find I have to use the wipers anyway. Even though it "rolls off" when driving (fast enough), enough drops are on the windshield at any time to inhibit the view.

It sure doesn't eliminate the use of the wipers completely but I think you can still see more because the water beading up.

If it doesn't rain enough or too little wipers should still get there workout.

It's not a windshield wiper replacement.

Edit: my wife hates when drive like this and don't use the wipers frequently.
