2013 Fusion Hybrid refueling

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Really like the car, except for problems with refueling. It has a 13.5 gallon tank as stated in owner's manual. My problem is refueling the car - the pump keeps turning off every 10 seconds. The fuel gauge isn't accurate. Traveled 107 miles on a trip and started with a full tank according to gauge. Gauge measured half a tank after only 107 miles. Is there any known fix for this refueling problem.

The fuel gauges on every new car made these days is "off" to try and keep you from running out of gas.

When it says Empty, there will still be 2-3 gallons left in there.

I think the most I've ever put in mine is 11.5 gallons.......when all of the indicators were saying empty or nearly so.

As for the shutting off early, try putting the nozzle in differently; farther in, not as far in or hold up on it while it is running,

If that continues across multiple gas pumps, see your dealer. There may be an obstruction OR the previous owner may have overfilled it and messed up the vapor recovery system.

I have a 2013 FFH SE, and the gas pump has shut off only a couple of times in over a year. Is the nozzle pushed all the way into the car's filler pipe? If so, pull it out a fraction of an inch and see if that helps. I think every fuel gauge is different. Mine appears to be fairly accurate, although it seems I get more miles out of the top half of the gauge than the bottom half. Is your car still under warranty? It may be time for a trip to your dealer's service department. Good luck. And, belatedly, welcome to the forum. It's a great place to learn all kinds of things about your FFH.

That's not right. Try running it closer to empty and then see how many gallons you can pump in. My gauge won't hit half until about 250 to 300 miles driven.

You may have the problem explained in TSB 13-6-01.

FUEL FILLER NOZZLE SHUTTING OFF BEFORE ADDING 3.8L (1 GALLON)—BUILT ON OR BEFORE 4/8/2013

A trip to the Dealer sounds like it's needed.

GrySql answered your filling issue, the gauge issue however is a learning curve. Best way to train the gauge to be more consistent to what is in the tank is to drive until empty and beyond a few times. What you need to do is first figure the cars real average MPG, then based on 12 gallons, drive 12*MPG miles, and fill the tank per the OM, 3 clicks I believe is what it says(after the fill issues is resolved). After doing that a few times, both the gauge and DTE will better reflect real world fuel use. The Gauge is computer driven, not actual fuel level in the tank, the float is for reference only.

Mine has always shown me at 0 DTE at around 10.2 gallons, so knowing it has at least 13 gallons I drove at least 100 miles past empty a couple times, and now the DTE and gauge is closer to what the tank actually holds and not what the computer thinks it holds.

This is what the 2014 FFH OM says:

Filling the Tank
For consistent results when filling the fuel tank:

• Turn the ignition off before fueling; an inaccurate reading results if the engine is left running.

• Use the same fill rate (low-medium-high) each time the tank is filled.

• Allow no more than two automatic click-offs when filling.

Results are most accurate when the filling method is consistent.
