higheroctave32 Report post Posted September 30, 2014 So with the eventual switch of the in car voice and touch technology to QNX, I am curious if the current cars out there are able to support the software and if we will also be included.I would like to believe so, as we are running windows code which would imply standardized hardware to some extent. Does anyone have any insights on this?

Waldo Report post Posted September 30, 2014 There will be two versions of the QNX system. One for the new hardware in the new cars and one to update older cars with the old hardware. They may not be available at the same time though. 1 GrySql reacted to this

I got an update 3 months after I got my 2010 Hybrid and then nothing more in the next 4 years.

Your statement is written as fact. I'd like to believe it, but it's hard without any substantiation.

Bryan Burch Report post Posted October 8, 2014 I don't know if QNX is really the next step. According to Google, Android Auto will be in some Fords in the future. Whether or not that includes a few models or all models, not sure. http://www.android.com/auto/ Scroll to the bottom to see which manufacturers are on board. I can see the day when Android touchscreens have popups and ads scrolling across the screen...not that its a bad thing... maybe the ads will keep the cost of the system low... KLH Report post Posted October 9, 2014 This thread is funny. Why would Ford incur costs to change something that doesn't bring in more revenue? Now with that being said, i'd be impressed if someone here would figure out how _we_ could replace MFT with QNX. Still, is there anything to indicate that running QNX would be better than MFT? Bryan Burch Report post Posted October 9, 2014 Much like the mobile phone XDA scene, there are community members who have the skills to update versions, squash bugs and add features to MFT. It's only a matter of time.

arob Report post Posted October 10, 2014 (edited) No. It's well past time to for us to take control of our cars.Amen to that! I would like the option to bring my own 7 inch mini tablet, be it iOS or Droid. Simply plug in to an in dash dock that only allows dock/undock when key is in the ignition (theft deter). When in the dock and car is running, it has access to climate controls as well as device specific car play type apps for entertainment, phone, messages, etc. Voice control is dependent on whatever device you bring, interface is what you are accustomed to. New device model comes out, swap in new for old. New OS, new or updated apps, download and use. No more dependence on a car manufacturer which are all notoriously slow and proprietary about their in car systems to come up with updates. Is that really too much to ask? I have far more confidence in the Apple/Google infrastructure to provide a safe and relevant experience than I do auto companies. Heck, I would even be willing to pay more for the flexibility. All the manufacturer has to do is provide an app or API to interface to the car functions, and a generic docking mechanism and vehicle interface module. Waldo Report post Posted October 10, 2014 Is that really too much to ask? Yes. What you are forgetting is that the automotive industry is governed by many, many regulations. There are many laws that prevent automakers doing certain things with regards to what's visible to driver's. Automakers have to follow those laws. What's still not really well defined in the industry is where the automaker's responsibility stops. But if an automaker provides a system that allows users to use their own tablets/devices to do things that are against the laws (like watching movies and so on), then the automaker can be held liable. So unless the automaker has a guarantee that you can't do anything illegal with the system as they provide it, you're not going to get what you're asking for. 3 GrySql, hybridbear and acdii reacted to this

Still, is there anything to indicate that running QNX would be better than MFT?QNX is a real time operating system. MFT is an application that runs on an operating system. The current operating system comes from Microsoft. If Microsoft is thrown out and replaced with QNX it will be the same MFT application running on QNX assuming it was written in a high level language that can be compiled to run on QNX. 1 GrySql reacted to this
Bryan Burch Report post Posted October 10, 2014 MFT is crap--pretty much in line with every other manufacturer out there not named Tesla. My 3 year bumper to bumper will probably string me along until FOMOCO decides MFT is no longer supported/updated. Time to go all William Wallace..break out hexrays and dig in.
