2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE adding a sub woofer and amp

Recommended Posts

This is a brief run down of my 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE w/ Sync install:

(1) Sun Down Audio 8" speaker (eBay E8v3D4 SUNDOWN AUDIO PRO 8" SUB DVC 4 OHM 300W)

(1) 8" ported box (eBay under 50 dollars, fits perfect above the hybrid battery 8" SINGLE PORTED L-VENTED 3/4 MDF GREY SUBWOOFER SUB SPEAKER ENCLOSURE BOX)

(1) Soundstream nano 1.650 amp (eBay SOUNDSTREAM PN1.650D 650 WATT RMS PICASSO NANO CLASS D MONOBLOCK AMPLIFIER)

(1) Line Out Converter (LOC)

(1) 100' roll of speaker wire

(1) Amp install kit

To start I tagged the front speaker wires which were easier to access right under the "Fusion" plastic piece on the floor. (Front speakers are twisted together, Drivers side front speaker White (+) and White Brown (-).

Passenger side White Violet (+) and White Orange (-).

On the drivers side I also found a switched 12V white with light purple stripe that sees 12V when the key is put in, not even turned on and holds 12V until the car is turned off key not even removed.

Ran speaker wire to the 2 front speakers and a Remote turn on wire to the Wht/Lt Purple wire.

wrapped all speaker wire in black hockey tape (looks more professional and I use to install and wanted it to look stock). Tucked wire under carpet and panels. Ran wires respectively under the rear seat and into trunk under the hybrid battery carpet.

Removed false floor carpet cover that covers the flat repair kit. cut the Styrofoam to custom fit my Soundstream amp. Ran 8 gauge power wire from battery again under the carpet to the amp.

Connected Amp, LOC and Sub woofer. Adjusted gain, Bass boost, LPF and Sub Sonic filter.

I liked that the sub woofer can be up on the hybrid battery out of the way, and can easily be placed closer to the trunk lid for loader bass.

Test run sounded good, it's not a pair of Kicker L7 12's but first time I can actually say WOW that's amazing for an 8" sub. Sun Down Audio is amazing.

-When driving I noticed a ridiculous thumping coming from the sub when ever the gas engine would turn on.... Thought I was clipping, turns out itt was the Active Noise Cancelling turning on, which brings me to why I used the front speakers.. Unscrew the "Oh Sh*t" handles on the head liner, pull the A-pillar plastic slightly off... You can see the small mic above your head on both the driver and passenger side. Others claimed to unhook the harness, but that would involve taking more off to remove the headliner, and I didn't want to damage or crease the headliner. I cut the black wire going to the mics and replaced the handles and pushed the A-pillar back into place. Problem solved.

Very happy with how this install went. No problems to report as of a week of use.

Picture attachments:

-Drivers speaker wires and Wht/Lt.Purp Remote turn on wire.

-Installed Sun Down Sub above hybrid battery.

-Active Noise Cancelling mic location there are 3 in the vehicle I only disabled the 2 front ones that are located by the handles. There is a rear one above the rear window in the center, but if you tag the front speakers the rear one does not seem to affect the sound output.

Hope this helps some of you.

I have the Sony HD radio but the mid bass is not very tight. Does anyone know if they use enclosures for the door mounted speakers?

Great write up m1xmstr,

I just finished installing a JBL ms-a5001 500watt RMS amp and paired it with a single 10 inch Dayton 10-22 Ultimax sub in a .71 cu ft sealed box. Its a great compliment to this car. I have the amp turned down a bit still as i'm not sure how hard to push it yet. So far very happy and it sounds great. Its definately not a 12 inch 1750 watt rms SSA XCON but it fits the roll well.

Again great write up definately saved me a lot of time finding what wires to tap into for the power input.

I'm sorry your having issues did you try the "Wht/Lt Purple wire" he mentioned? I didn't need a switched 12v wire myself as a chose an amp with newer technology and will auto sense signal on the line in ;) If i were you or if i needed more accessories on my fusion i'd wire in my own switched 12v fuse block running from a relay.. just me though.. do you have a volt meter? might be your quickest method to get your stuff up and working.

EDIT:

I saw the wires he was talking about when i tapped into the front driver speaker wires but didn't need it so i left it alone. Its there though i verified his instructions are correct at least for a 2013

The wire goes straight up into a module right above the lever that opens the hood. It's easier to tap into it there. Just pull back the carpet and trim and it'll be the first thing you see. I just found it and plan on using it to turn on my amp.

i know this post is a little old but did you run the power to the battery in the trunk and is it necessary to cut the mics?

By disabling the ANC mics near the front speakers, have you had any issues with the sync voice commands???? And are the steps the same for the 2014 model????

Alas I will also bring up an older topic.

Am I correct that the rear deck hole sizes are for 6x9s? I would like to move over the pair of Kenwood KFC-6983PS speakers and KAC-5204 2-way amplifier.

I would like to add a small subwoofer as well. Being as I only have a 2-way amplifier I was thinking one of the powered Bazooka type subs would be more appropriate.

Any thoughts?
