aschulz261 Report post Posted May 19, 2014 Last summer I drove through the mountains in Colorado, many of which are well above 5000 ft. It seemed that whenever the engine was running it was at 3000 rpm or higher. I would guess that to be normal because as the elevation descended, so did the rpm's the engine was running at. What kind of elevation are you at?

What gear are you talking about? You can put the tachometer on MyView to see RPMs. When going down a mountain the ICE will run without fuel being injected to slow the car down due to engine braking. Up the mountain will make the engine roar just like any other car.

I think you need to Google "CVT" (Continuously Variable Transmission). The Fusion hybrid doesn't have any gears. inco Report post Posted May 19, 2014 When you accelerate hard, or in your case climbing the mountain, you are using the ICE to do that. When it kicks in you will hear the slight roar and it will stay on until such time as you switch to electric. What you describe I think is normal and the gas engine is doing it's job. Easy Rider Report post Posted May 20, 2014 Up the mountain will make the engine roar just like any other car. The last car I had that "roared" like the Fusion Hybrid was my '57 Chevy with a 4-barrel carb and hi-flow air cleaner. Or to put it another way, the Fusion Hybrid engine IS noisy under load......and it seldom runs when it is NOT under load.Others have said that the 2013 model was even worse. So the noise he is hearing likely is perfectly normal.
acdii Report post Posted May 20, 2014 Also the altitude may have something to do with the sound since the air is thinner. It may have to run at a higher RPM to compensate.
