Carol S. Report post Posted March 17, 2014 Bought our new car on Sat. and it has a toatal of 34 miles on it. Have been a bit overwhelmed after reading and looking at tutorials on you tube. Almost afraid to drive it... LOL. Love that this forum exists and after readiing alot of posts I realize this is probably going to be a process to learn how best to drive to get max MPGs. On the way home we only got 26 MPG! Me, being a "natural worrier" have read some people's posts about some FFHs never do get even in the high 30s. I know it's too early on to be thinking this, but did anyone else get that low MPGs when first driving it? Any info or insight will be deeply appreciated. Toz Report post Posted March 17, 2014 (edited) short drive, cold weather, new hybrid driver. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have gotten milage that low on short trips. If your milage continues to stay that low after a few hundred miles in warmer weather with longer trips, then I might get worried Edited March 17, 2014 by Toz 2 hybridbear and Wingmn reacted to this
corncobs Report post Posted March 17, 2014 short drive, cold weather, new hybrid driver. I wouldn't worry too much ablut it. I have gotten milage that low on short trips. If your milage continues to stay that low after a few hundred miles in warmer weather with longer trips, then I might get worried+1 on not to worry about it for now. I had results as low as 18 MPG on short trips and cold weather. 1 Wingmn reacted to this
jeff_h Report post Posted March 17, 2014 Funny... I have someone at my office named Carol S and she is a worrier too... where are you located in VA? I am in Stafford County but work near Dulles. 1 hybridbear reacted to this
djminfll Report post Posted March 18, 2014 :congrats: If it makes you feel better, my trip home tonight scored 26mpg - a new low for me. I can only imagine it is due to EVERY single light turning red all the way home. Usually, they are progressive lights on green - you miss one light, and the next 5 or 6 are green and you sail along at 45mpg in EV mode. As many previous posts indicate, your mileage will increase slowly but steadily, and real improvement doesn't show real improvement until after 5K miles. :waiting:Good luck! 2 corncobs and hybridbear reacted to this
donsdinr Report post Posted March 22, 2014 I have owned my ffh for 3 months now, have 3k miles on it, and returned it to the dealer for first oil change this week. They could find nothing wrong with the car which would affect mileage and no current updates for it. Temps are in the fifties now in Iowa. I practice all the suggested driving habits and never exceed 60 mph. I still get mpg in the mid or upper 30's. Yes, we use ethanol here. It is the only gasoline available. I like the car but am thinking I could have saved $3k or more and just bought a nonhybrid Fusion. Some disgruntled FFH owners on other chat lines are talking class action law suites. That happened against Hona Civic Hybrids a few years ago.
clummus Report post Posted March 22, 2014 I should have gotten the gas version. I get about 34mpg with 17000 miles on mine.
Nick Golden Report post Posted March 23, 2014 I have 2014 FFH that I got last month. About 1200 miles on it. My average is 44.0 and rising quickly. I hit 53 mpg on a 23 mile run today that was a mix of highway and side roads. Play around between the Engage view and the Empower. Read lots of tips on this forum. 4 DeeCee, hybridbear, corncobs and 1 other reacted to this

Nick Golden Report post Posted March 24, 2014 I have hit 48 with the cruise control at 65. I wanted to see how it does a bit faster on the turnpike. Steep drop :(
hybridbear Report post Posted March 24, 2014 (edited) I have hit 48 with the cruise control at 65. I wanted to see how it does a bit faster on the turnpike. Steep drop :(Speed is a killer, cold is a killer. In the summer you should be able to consistently see 45+ at 65 MPH when negating positive or negative impacts of wind/elevation/etc. When the temp is cold it's a struggle to hit 40 MPG at 65 MPH without help from the wind. Just brought my ffh SE home today and did about a 30 minute drive with mixed highway and local streets and got it to 38ish. I did accelerate a bit more than normal on the highway just to test the horsepower on it, but I enjoy the drive on it so far. I too am worried I won't hit the high 40's as advertised everywhere on ford's propaganda.
djminfll Report post Posted March 25, 2014 I guess everyone's car acts a little differently - Nick Golden said he gets 48mpg at 65mph on the highway - I actually try to avoid the highway, because I won't drive faster than 60mph because mpg drops when I do that. At 60mph on relatively level ground and not getting stuck in traffic, I can exceed 48mpg, but at anything more than 60mph, numbers start to fall. Unless I'm in a HUGE rush, I keep it to 60mph max. The only time I go faster is when we drive to the gulf coast of Florida to visit the in-laws. It's about 150 miles, so I do bump it up to 70mph for that drive. 1 hybridbear reacted to this
DeeCee Report post Posted March 25, 2014 I just completed a 950 mile trip this weekend and most of the driving was with cruise set at 65 or 70 depending on posted speed limit. Mileage (actual, not car's computer) was 44.2 mpg. My FFH has 21,800 miles now. the first half of the trip was with good temps (60 to 70 deg.) with mileage near 48 mpg. Second half, trip back home, was with temps between 27 and 39 deg which dropped the overall mileage. Still quite satisfied with the overall 44.2 mpg. 2 corncobs and hybridbear reacted to this
