Allowing Engine to idle while parked

Recommended Posts

I noticed a little rattle coming from under the hood when my wife pulls My Hi TY into the garage. Is there a way to run the engine at idle and get out and open the hood and listen to it run? The dealers must be able do this for diagnostic purposes frequently. I know there was a test mode procedure for the 2010 that would let me do it and track down a problem.

With the car in Park you can depress the gas pedal to run the ICE. If the ICE is cold, it will stay on until it warms up. If it is warm, it will only stay on as long as you depress the pedal. You can also put the car in Park and run the A/C or seat heaters/defrost/etc to use up electricity. Once the useable SOC gets down below 5% the ICE will come on and run to charge the battery until the useable SOC reaches 30%. This will take a few minutes in my experience. Hope this helps!

Is it a rattle or a buzz? The electric brake booster makes a buzzing sound when building up pressure. When your wife is pulling into the garage she is probably braking and since she's driving slowly she would be using the pads and thus the brake booster pump will make periodic buzzing noises.

I run the A/C almost 100% of the time due to the warm weather here, but every once in a while, there is a cool day where the A/C isn't needed. On these rare occasions, I am amazed at the silence with the A/C not running. This may sound stupid, but could the noise be the A/C or heater motor? Just a thought...

That's another great suggestion. The electric AC compressor is quite noisy.
