poor gas tank utilization

First off, Ford designed the tank so that with the HVB you can fold the rear seats down for passthrough. Does Honda have this? I doubt they did it for weight savings, I believe Ford was going for more utility, and usefulness, which none of the other family hybrid sedans have/had. Also remember a Prius is designed from the wheels up to get high MPG. From the tire design to the shape of the body and every little thing added to it to make it as efficient as it is. The Fusion Hybrid is based off the Fusion gas model, which has more room, better handling and many more features than a Pruis. Considering the FFH gets twice the fuel efficiency of the non Hybrid models, thats pretty damned good technology!

Not to beat a dead horse(thread), but the Prius is an altogether different car. Two of my friends drive them and they are devoid of any driving fun or touch of luxury which our cars have in spades. Prii are amazingly efficient, but the interior is a veritable sea of hard plastic surfaces and less than well designed low res, monochrome and quite plain hybrid info displays. I love my car for more than its great mileage. I love its beauty, its comfort and quiet and its easy to understand yet lovely to look at hybrid info gauges.

And that is why those owners defend their cars so much, They be jealous of our Rollin! I owned one years ago, and entertained the notion last year when I had so many issues with Ford, that is until I opened the door and saw the spartan cabin with cheap recycled materials. I can't believe that was 7 years ago when I drove my first Hybrid.

It sounds like no one has run out of gas in a FFH to find out how big the tank is Actually. We won't know the number of gallons until someone does. IMHO As stated before CMAX is rated for 13.5gal tank, but actually has 13.9-14gal tank. A number of CMAXer's have proven this. I would think the FFH would be similar in size. It seems like a waist of time to fill up with less than 12gals. IMO 21% of my fill ups(131 Total) have been less than 12gals. and most were from wanting to have a full tank to start a long trip. :shift: :)

I think I must be missing something here as I'm not getting the intense interest (obsession?) with running the tank to near empty and then force feeding your FFH with the greatest possible number of gallons when refueling. I'm currently averaging 45.2 MPG (actual) and 10 gallons lasts me way beyond my bladder capacity and rear end comfort limits.

 

Is this really a personal inconvenience or is it more of a challenge to hit some artificial goal for number of miles on a single tank of gas?

This, and having the fuel gauge actually read empty when it is empty. It is a 13.5 gallon tank, yet the gauge will have you believing its only 11. Now my Freestyle with 172K miles on it, when it says it used 13.4 gallons of gas, it used 13.4 gallons of gas. When planning out a trip, knowing how far you can actually go on a tank, can help with planning your stops.

 

When I drove the BD to Florida, that gauge was all over the place, so I stopped more often for gas than I needed to.

Your fuelly average is showing a very impressive 48.4 MPG which gives you a range of 532 miles on 11 gallons. I suspect that far exceeds the range achieved by average motorists and you are achieving very impressive results even for a FFH. No offense intended, but I am curious why you want to take your FFH down to 0.5 gallons left in the tank before refueling?

When we've done road trips we've always planned on about 450 miles between gas stops. At 40-45 MPG on the interstate this means 10-11 gallons approximately. Around town I would consistently run the hybrid down as low as possible. With the Energi we'll likely fill it once a month to use up our gas rewards from the local grocery chain which expire after 30 days. We combine gas station trips with my parents to get the most out of the 20 discounted gallons.

My 2010 Merc Milan hybrid had a larger tank, the same size as the ICE version, 18 gallons if I recall correctly. I think it could easily do 800 miles on a tank. I could drive from Chicago to Columbus Ohio and back and not buy gas, or usually fill up at the cheapest station along the way. It was nice to be able to game the gas pricing boys at big oil and it made road trips more fun, using Gas Buddy to find and fill at only the cheapest stations.

Not to brag, but I have 3 tanks that are at least a hundred miles farther than that getting 64-65.5mpg. Averaging 40mph you can get 70mpg and again you have at least 13.9gallon tank. :)
