Irregular Turn Signal Behavior

One thing I've found is that the FFH will automatically turn off the turn signal if you leave it on and forget it. For example, if you're driving straight on the freeway and turn the turn signal on it will shut off automatically after awhile. I've had it happen a few times where I've been driving in heavy traffic so I just put my turn signal on and watch for a spot to get over and sometimes it's taken so long that the turn signal turns itself off since I have kept the wheel straight the whole time.

My 2005 Mustang GT conv did that as well. I would be willing to bet any recent Ford product with a PCM that controls the signals will do that. :)

My 05 mustang scrolls a little message in the odometer window telling me my blinker is on after about 1/2 mile driving with it activated. I think it will start to chime after that, but I don't recall ever having it turn itself off. I'll have to give it a try and see exactly what happens. I have the 4 gauge premium package.

I've seen this intermittently. I however think it is a software bug, not a sensor issue. I've had it repeatedly refuse to blink more then once after full activation regardless of steering wheel position or movement. Sitting dead center and not moving it would still shut right off. However its impossible to get it to act up predictably so I have 0 confidence that Ford or a dealer would even catch this issue, much less fix it. :(

 

I can reliably make the non-touchscreen center display's computer become completely scrambled, but again this is a software issue so I know the dealer can't do anything to help.

I seem to notice the early turn signal shut off happening in the Energi way more than I ever did in the FFH.

This definitely happens regularly in the Energi, like the OP described. Interesting little difference between cars.

I get the same in my 2013 MKZ. I only experience this on the left, and not the right.

Here is a new twist. The other day as i was coming to a stop with my right signal on, the dash goes Boing, cross traffic failure alert, and the turns signals stop working. Soon as I pressed OK and the screen cleared the signal resumed. Something is screwy with the CTA, as I get that warning all the time, but it clears up and works without restarting. I did get a VHR when it happened, but it is as useful as teet's on a boar. (my dad's favorite saying)

This issue happens all the time in the Energi. It almost never happened in the FFH we had before. Something is different between the cars.

I just noticed that a new SSM has been published for "Turn Signals Cancel Too Quickly". The fix is an update to the SCCM module. This applies to 2013 Fusion/MKZ only.

The 2013 was the only model year to have the electronic turn signal stalk. I hope the OP will see this. As I recall, he was very upset about this issue.

Thank you for the pm about this hybridbear. I checked this thread this weekend to see if any updates or new input was here and had basically given up on it. Glad to know I wasn't crazy about the way the turn signal acts and hopefully this will fix it.

I just had this issue fixed on my '13 via a recalibration of the turn signal.

 

I rented a '15 (non hybrid) on vacation once and its turn signal design is definitely much improved. Pity the dealer won't just rip the steering wheel out of a '15 to put inside my car :(

Wanted to confirm: A calibration of the steering wheel fixes this problem. I had mine calibrated at the dealer and it fixed the left turn issue.

Since the SCCM recalibration I have not had a single instance of having the turn signal cancel too quickly. Spots where it used to cancel early every time it now works perfectly. I, for one, am very satisfied with the results of this recalibration. I hope that others have had similar improvements in their turn signal performance.

I've been dealing with the left turn signal cutting out early for over a year and finally had it fixed yesterday. The service manager didn't even try to reproduce the issue and had the tech perform SSM 44909. The total bill would have been just under $100 but my Ford ESP took care of it. It's nice to have the left turn signal working properly again.
