Air Intake w/Resonator installation

Recommended Posts

At Levittown Ford they are $28.00 the rest is shipping. I checked two local dealers and they were $48.00.

Yes you are correct the $40 was including shipping I should have added that detail sorry.

Took mine in to the dealer today for an oil change and ordered the part while I was there. Order sheet says it is on back order with an estimated delivery of 3-31-14. Parts rep said don't be surprised if that date is missed. Price was $43 plus tax.

Maybe he his a hobby magician and wants to try his skills on Ford. ;)

Anyway good luck with it saving money is always cool.

"Customer complaining of unpleasant noise" He said since the part was revised they were aware it was problem so he's giving it a shot. He hasn't gotten back to me on that, so we'll see. It's backordered anyway, so there's no rush

"My service guy is trying to see if he can get it replaced under warranty"

I know I'll step on some toes here, but this is dishonest and irritates me. Those of us who have early 2013s knew there would be improvements made, some of which like the PCM update Ford did at no charge. But I don't think the intake falls into that category. I have the highest respect for Ford and want them to make money on the great job they've done with the FFH. They can't do that if any improvements they apply to a new model year have to be retrofitted for free on the prior year's vehicles.

If this was an upgrade only on 2014 models I might agree, but same model job2 cars built 2 weeks after mine received it. Considering I paid over $1000 for an extended warranty I wouldn't feel bad about it, and their service department recommended this, I didn't even consider it. I just told them I wanted to order the part. If this is something others can take advantage of under their own warranties, I think it's important to mention. How is this any different than other TSBs?

All that said nothing has happened yet.

I see both sides of this argument...I don't know that I would call a request to replace the old-style intake with the resonator one "dishonest". It's not like someone went out and broke their current intake to request a replacement, that would be dishonest. Perhaps you could call in unethical, or trying to take advantage of the system.

But at the same time, it would really suck to have a hybrid built at the end of April without this intake when cars built 1 or 2 weeks later have it. And when Fusion Energis built 2-3 months earlier have it. And, considering that LASooner didn't suggest this, I don't think we should judge him. However, Ford hasn't put out a TSB about this to our knowledge. If his service department reports back that there is a TSB where Ford is willing to swap these intakes on their dime for owners who have complained of an "unpleasant noise", then I don't think we should criticize ppl who decide to pursue that option.

B25Nut - you can remember how many ppl came to the Forum early on commenting about the loud, grumbling roar of the ICE in the FFH. It's likely that they didn't just come here to complain, but also complained to dealerships loudly enough that Ford found a solution. Ultimately it's up to Ford to decide how much to give their customers. And, while they might not publicize this like they did with the PCM upgrade, if they issue a TSB calling for dealers to replace intakes if someone complains of an "unpleasant noise" from the ICE, then let Ford replace them under warranty. Unless you're a Ford stockholder, I wouldn't be too concerned about their profits, they'll be fine.

Ford does seem to be more proactive about satisfying customer concerns than other manufacturers. The version of Entune that came installed in our Prius from the factory had a bug in the software which would sometimes cause music to start playing on its own through bluetooth audio or a USB connected device. I had read a thread on PriusChat about this and knew that a new version of Entune had been released before we took delivery of our car. So, why was our car not upgraded? Because Toyota will only allow dealers to perform the update if the owner complains of the specific bug which is fixed in the update. When I brought the Prius in for the 5k mile free service, I requested that they also update Entune to the newest version. The SA put in my VIN and said that I wasn't eligible for any updates. I had to pull up the thread on PriusChat on my phone to prove to him that there even was a new version of Entune. Then he said they could do it. About 15 minutes later he came over to me in the waiting room and asked "Why do you want the Entune upgrade?" I asked what he meant. He said, "What's wrong with your car that we should give you the updated Entune?" So then I told him that we're having the issue with the BT/USB audio starting on its own. He said, "Toyota will only allow us to perform the update when the customer complains about the specific issue that this update fixes." Be glad that Ford doesn't take this approach to customer service.

If I could figure out the dimensions and internals of this resonator.

I'd get one whipped up on a 3D printer.

Then bolt it on my existing air intake.

Probably cost less too.

If I was to guess from some work I did years ago on a couple of Weber 44 IDF carb intake air boxes I'd bet the shape is not as important as the volume.

This Atkinson motor pushes back some gases into the airbox on each cycle and that creates a situation where there is nowhere for the incoming gases to go in that skinny intake tube and the airbox.

The kidney shaped addition probably adds just that certain amount of volume that gives the momentary blowback gases somewhere to go so as to not restrict the incoming fresh air, a buffer zone of about the same volume as the blowback from the Atkinson.

In between cycles the incoming air just passes that chamber and is a void until the next blowback effect.

The smooth contours of the add-on chamber give a better airflow than a rectangular affair.

Pretty wild theory isn't it?

Well My wifes opinion was that it seemed quieter, my opinion is somewhat quieter but, more importantly the intake noise has lost the harshness that made it unpleasant.
For $40, well worth the expense.

I wonder if every Dealer will come to the same conclusion.

It would be nice if you'd post a picture of the Service Order receipt when you get the part changed out.

Would new modified intake with resonator become a OEM produced item since it seems the late 2013 and 2014 have it from factory, I have seen the old intake piece on Ebay for $26 including shipping, maybe by end of year it will be available for half the dealer wants now.....

The warranty is for what is on the vehicle when built. Plain and simple. It warranties against manufacturer defects and failure. Not for running changes on the assembly line.

Last year with 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid owners who had the cracking noise from front end, myself included, TSB 13-5-24 was issued by Ford to finally solved cracking noise problem at no charge, which is a very significant costly procedure., Seems that washers/spacers was not installed correctly or left off early production FFH. Later production 2013 FFH were supposedly had these spacers installed. Similarly the Air Intake w/Resonator were installed on late productions 2013 FFH, and not on earlier production vehicles. Seems that Ford has acknowledged that the resonator addition does reduce engine noise issue when ICE kicks in. Seems that these issues has some close similarities.

"Seems that these issues have some close similarities"

I disagree. The cracking noise gave most of us the insecure feeling that it could get worse and cause handling problems and/or lead to something breaking. Any noise like this gives a bad impression to anyone inside or outside the car that hears it. Ford knew that and fixed it with a TSB. My cracking noise went away by itself, but I still had the TSB applied. The original intake created no feelings that the FFH could be unreliable, and I don't think anyone here made the statement "I wish Ford would design a different intake to make the ICE quieter".
