FFH Oddities

FFH has done a couple of really weird things this week that it has never done before:

 

1. On my last tankful, the dashboard computer indicated that I had used 9.5 gallons of gas when the Low Fuel light went on. I filled the tank, and pumped 11.5 gallons. The computer indicated I had gotten 45.6mpg when I had actually only gotten 39.5mpg. I have never had such a large discrepancy before!

 

2. We are having a cold snap here is South Florida (based on OUR normal weather, believe me, I know most of you reading this won't have any sympathy for us!) and temps have been in the 40's and 50's. This morning, it was 43 degrees when I left the house to take my grandson to school. The whole way there and back, the car did not go into EV mode, and the battery icon on the dashboard showed the battery was just a hair below Full. Later this morning, I left to take the dog to the park and the car started in EV mode and stayed in EV mode for over a mile. Is this typical "cold weather" behavior, or is this something weird? I don't think I ever drove the car in temps below 50 since I got the car, so this might be normal behavior but I'm just not used to it!

You are right no sympathy about the FL "cold snap" it was 13* this morning here.

 

Other than that your FFH behaves like ours do up here. I turn off the heat for the first few miles and it goes into EV like it does in warmer temps.

 

As for the MPG on my last tank 42.6 displayed - 39.8 actual.

wow 13? Heat wave for you, it was 9 by me.

 

If your HVAC was set to auto, then its perfectly normal to see what yours did this morning. Most likely it was calling for cabin heat. Next time in question, pull up the system screen (assuming you have MFT), and it will describe why ICE is running.

 

I had posted the same thing regarding tank discrepancy, and also have it noted on my car records with Ford. Mine was in the red with -30 past DTE when I filled up, and it only took a little over 10 gallons, then the next tank fell fast, and I refilled before a half tank to find out how much it used.

 

 

Its a gallon and a half difference. My last fill was exactly the same, gallon and a half difference from what the trip said and what was actually put in the tank. When the weather warms up, hoping it returns to what it was like before, only a few tenths difference.

We are seeing the same thing in St Louis. This morning it was 12 degrees. The one plus about the cold is that I see the battery charging full quicker, since it takes some time before going into EV.

 

The last tank fill up there was a 2.5 gallon discrepency in the amount of gas used. It has been written down in our records for the dealer as well.

 

We are all looking forward to the warmer temps.

If my math is correct our one litre = .264 us gallons. One litre is about $1.23 here today which would mean one gallon US would be about $3.25. Our dollar is 91 cents to yours so it gets even worse. That would be $3.55 CDN.

Thats the price for Midgrade, which is right about the same price for regular every where else. Midgrade every where else is at least 20 cents more. If I went in the store and bought $20 of things I would get .20 off per gallon for 25 gallons, so it would be $3.259 a gallon. Since I can get the Midgade for maybe a few pennies more than 87 everywhere else, I dont mind paying that price, but if I ever need to do some food shopping, I try to time it to when I need a full tank.

 

Yep IL has some high fricking gas prices.

Of the 3 fill-ups I've had so far, one was around 2.5 gallons more than the car indicated, one was .1 less than the car indicated, and the most recent was about 1.8 gallons more. I still think a large portion of this is attributable to the gas used during a remote start not being counted. The best proof I have of this is my MPG readout stays the same from the time I got out of my car until I get back in, even if I was running remote start for 10 minutes or so before getting in. This is completely illogical, as the miles per gallon should drop since I'm using gas while not traveling any distance.

 

The middle tank where the numbers were equal or slightly less was during the holiday break when I was not using remote start as much since I mostly use it while at the office. I'm not overly concerned about padding my MPG numbers since I know they will greatly increase once it warms up. I'd rather have a warm car when it's well below freezing. Even last weekend when it warmed up to around 40 I saw 50+ MPG for several longer trips I took. If anything, this is a good lesson in how much energy various systems use.

I think you just hit upon the discrepancy. I didn't even consider my run time with remote start. Makes perfect sense now. I think this next tank I will go without remote start and see if I still get a big difference.

You should ask Ashley to bring this up with the technical team to find out if this is really the source of the discrepancy. We don't have remote start and we had almost a 2 gallon discrepancy on our last tank in this extreme cold.
