My brand new FFH just quit on me twice today

Recommended Posts

I purchased a 2014 FFH a couple of weeks ago, and today it quit on me twice. Each time the sequence was:

1. EV mode and ICE started surging against each other as shown on the display

2. Displayed " hill start asist not available at this time" or words to that effect,

3. then the Wrench symble and the "pull over safely warning". I hit "OK" but it then just said "chekc the manual" with no further suggestion.

Car is in with the dealer right now, any suggestions on what could be happening? I saw a topic back in Jan 2013 that looked similar.

Welcome to the forum, sorry about the prob with your new FFH. No idea on your issue, sounds like a PCM type issue, computer control over the drive-trains went bad.... Just my NON educated guess. Please let us know what happens. Welcome again, hope it gets resolved quickly.

I forgot to add I had heated seats added (aftermarket, dealer recommended) and I wonder if the 12v battery is being drained as the forum shows that a low 12v battery could trigger these issues - AND the temperature was 1 deg F today and I was just running round town quite a bit.

Last year, within the first month of ownership (Dec '12) my car did the same thing, my Dealer at that time could not identify any cause.

In desperation they performed a Hard Reset (disconnected the low and high voltage batteries for 10 minutes) and told me to drive it around.

I have, and for a year now that symptom has never returned.

I hope your Dealer can find a cause, because after the dismal performance of that first Dealer I found one with a really good Service Dept.

Had something similar to this early on with mine. I was in a hurry at the time and jumped in, turned the key,put it in reverse and backed out. Got a bunch of unrelated warnings and thew car would hardly run. Finally stopped and shut the car off, restarted and waited for the "Ready to drive" alert and then went on my way with no further problem.

I think my problem was that I tried to go before the car (computer) had fully booted and was ready to go.

I had aftermarket seat heaters in my 2010, they worked pretty good too, but whoever installed them busted up the side panels on both seats pretty bad. I doubt they would cause a battery issue since the DC/DC converter supplies the power while the car is running, not the 12V battery. (at least it is supposed to). Most likely it is a hardware problem, or you drove off before the car was ready to drive, but since it happened twice, my guess is hardware.

DC, I had the exact thing happen to me two weeks ago. It is the only time I've had my dash light up with something that wasn't normal. I hope to never try a fast start again.

Next time you have a similar problem just stop the car and turn it off for a short time and then restart it. I believe I had this problem once and that cured it. :)

I had it happen to me once. I think it was a fail to stat the ICE with no retry. Cycled to key and all was well.

Quit on me again this morning, 3 times. First time was at an intersection, I had to push the car out of the way. I have not had to push a car in 20 years or more! It does not like to run in Wisconsin winters, it was minus 9 deg F this morning. Last time it quit it was zero F. Interesting that I got the same message each time "Hill start assist not available at this time" before the Wrench of Death was displayed. Able to re-start each time after waiting several minutes so I got it to the dealer.

If you are planning to visit Wisconsin in a FFH don't come in the winter!

Cold solder joint somewhere in a module. When it gets really cold, if there is one, it will open up when the metals shrink. Thats my guess on this, but which one? These cars are more troublesome in the winter from past experiences with the other hybrids, they don't like cold.

I have a case entered with Ford Motor Co. CAS-3743723 and someone is assigned to my "case".

Thanks for your offer.

Dealer still has the car, they gave me a loaner, (a new Mazda 3 which has great steering but very poor ride quality).

No fix in view at this time.

Why do Ford dealers not loan out Ford products?

The last time I had a loaner it was a Dodge Avenger. Felt like a tin can on wheels.

First of all, I am sorry to hear about your problem kenashu. I hope it gets resolved. Secondly, I think it's amazing/awesome (and very good marketing, and I don't mean that in a negative way) that Ford is semi-officially represented here (thanks FordService!!) Having said that, I'd take a short video noting the date and time it happens from here on out. There seems to be no indication that Ford doesn't want to do the right thing and get this resolved, which is wonderful! Nevertheless, in case it can't be resolved, it's good to have the problem documented.

Ford say they are going to buy it back from me.

What happened between "Dealer still has the car" on January 7th and the buyback offer? Is there anything we could learn from your experience? Sounds like the problem was more serious than just reprogramming or replacing the PCM.
