Air intake resonator chamber

Recommended Posts

I don't recall the old Fusion having this odd shaped compartment sticking off the air intake. Does everyone's car have this?

It is probably a resonance chamber to reduce/modify intake noise.

This^^ They most likely added it to get rid of the low RPM drone. When the ICE is running at the most optimal speed to power ratio, which happens to be when it can hold the speed and use the least amount of fuel, it has this deep growl. Someone also mentioned that the 14 noise cancellation was better, and this addition may have helped.

Fascinating! This must explain why the ICE in this car is noticeably quieter than the old one even when the ScanGauge shows similar HP and LOD numbers to what would make the noisy growl in the other car.

Just lean on it, oops it cracked, then take it in saying, it sounds noisy I hear a hiss and the CEL is on. :)

The old FFH, FFE and MKZH part was this one from the Engine Air Box Cover schematic:

Part # 9A624A
Engine Air Box Tube
2.0 4V Dual Over Head Cam PFI Gas/Electric
$43.00

Call your Dealer and see if they have the new design in stock, or can order the newly designed Tube.

Thanks for posting this maybe we can upgrade our '13 for an even quiter ride and it's already very quite.

I think the Atkinson cycle features used by our hybrids cause extra intake noise. The intake valves stay open longer such that part of the gas-air charge in the cylinder blows back into the intake to help the fuel mix on the next intake cycle. Intake noise is probably much of the ICE noise and this chamber acts to moderate intake sound. Still plenty of drone left. Wonder if some type of insulating wrap around the intake tube and maybe the actual (plastic?) manifold would help quieten the ICE?

I'm going to order the newly designed Intake Tube thru the Fusion Forum's Levittown Ford Dealer at their discount price, it's $28.90 plus shipping.

This is the Part number Benny gave me, with no guarantee that it will fit.

Do both Energis have it though?

Yes, they were only built 5 weeks apart but I just checked both, and yes they both have it.

It appears the chamber was added on all Job 2 cars. I believe all Energis were Job 2 so it makes sense that they would all have it.

I just checked my '13 FFH Titanium and it doesn't have it and I think mine is a Job 2. I will stay tuned to this topic to see if those that have "retrofitted" the new style intake find that it will fit and if so, if it reduces noise. If so, it looks like an inexpensive and easy to install upgrade. :)

BoatRacers comment made me curious and I checked mine. For sure a Job2 but no chamber.

I did some "research" on cars.com and compared 14' vs. 13' and the few that I could find with a picture of the engine all the 14's had the chamber but none of the 13's.

Maybe they added the chamber sometime thru the Job 2 but maybe also just starting with 14' MY.
