Found a screw in my tire

Attached is the image. I was able to remove it with my hands after some work. It was in the center of the tire.

The tire seems to be ok after 3 days. What do you guys think? Should I take it to repair or it should be fine?

While I'm sure that more enlightened people will argue "Take it in to be repaired!", I wouldn't. Still, I'd keep an eye on the tire by measuring the air pressure. If it's not the same after 5 days, I'd repair the tire. Of course, YMMV...

Hey welcome to the road hazard club! If that didn't make it through the tread to actually start leaking, personally I would leave it as is (basically echoing KLH, above). However if you won't have peace of mind leaving it like that, you can go to a tire shop and pay them to take the tire off the rim and check the inside of the tire, however that would probably be about $20 or so to remount and balance the tire.

I'd probably super glue it, but $20 is a cheap price to pay for peace of mind.

I took it to the dealer today for peace of mind. I explained the guy the situation and he said there was really nothing they could do unless there is a hole there.

After insisting a little he was going to take a look but it was too dark to see it and he asked me to bring it tomorrow.

 

It's the first time I take it to this dealership but they didn't give me a good impression. I'm not sure if I'll go back tomorrow.

 

 

By the way, could it be just a coincidence? Since this happened my conmute has been decreased 5 MPG. The weather didn't get much colder lately, so I don't think it's that.

I would perhaps check the tire pressure in that tire daily or every other day until you're sure that it isn't leaking.

A screw like that is either going to make a hole or it isn't. If it made a hole, you'd have a flat tire in 5 minutes and your TPMS light would be on. Obviously it didn't make a hole, so there's nothing to be fixed.

 

And no, it's not going to affect your mileage in any way.

I'm glad to hear that. Thanks. My concern was that maybe the tire could get more easily damaged in that area when driving from now on.

I don't know if I agree with you, Waldo - my tire picked up a nail, and it took about 2 days for the tire pressure to decrease significantly enough to prompt the TPMS. I brought it in to Ford, they plugged it with a permanent plug, and said I would not have any problems with it. So far, so good.

But you still had the nail in it when it was leaking. I guarantee you that if you had pulled that nail out, it would be flat in a minute. Given that LEM has already removed the screw but still doesn't have a flat, his situation is different than yours.

Just an update. I checked the pressure yesterday and it shows 35 PSI, just like the other tires... :)

However I'm still suspicious about my mileage. It went down the whole week by 5, and the weather hasn't really changed. I know what the other user said but I can't find a reason!

You would know or not if you are driving the same commute routes, but are you sure you haven't changed your driving habits without realizing it since you are preoccupied with your tire going flat or worrying about where that next screw in the road might be?
