Engine heater on Energi during winter

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I intend to buy an Titanium Energi Plug In. I live on Montreal. You know that winter is cold here...

I commute to work for 18 km (one way), so I intend to use the car most on electric charge.

I want to install an engine heater but asking if it will be really useful for my commutes.

I understand that during winters it will always start the gas engine from the start, so I think that the heater will be useful, at least when I will go to work in the morning, because on work I will have to keep it outside... After 9 hours at -15 F it will be a hard start... I hope that the efficiency of the batteries will not be affected permanently by the cold weather, so, even during the winter the efficiency (autonomy on EV) will decrease, hope to get it back on the summer, almost 100%

I don't own an Energi, and I am sure some others will give better advise, but the Energi, unlike the Hybrid, has an electric only mode that will fulfill your purpose I believe. :)

Yes, but in the winter I don't think that I can use it EV only, but will start the engine from the beginning, to warm the car (interior) and so on. I don't expect to get 25 miles on -15F evening with lights / climate on... But at least to be just a little bit better than a hybrid in the winter

The Energi doesn't need the engine to warm the car interior. The heater and the air conditioner are electric. If the car is set to EV Only it will not start the engine until the HVB is depleted or it detects a condition that requires the engine. The interior of the car can be brought up to temperature before you leave using power from your electric company if the charger is plugged in.

Engine Block Heaters might also be standard equipment from Ford in Canada. In Minnesota all the hybrids and Energis come with a block heater from the factory at no cost.

I like it, but on ford.ca I can configure the Energi and the heater comes as 100$ option... So I suppose that is not included in standard :(.

Interesting...what if you look on window stickers of some Canadian Energis? Do they come with block heaters?

On our Window Sticker it shows up under optional equipment and says "NO CHARGE". In the USA you cannot order a block heater. Ford only equips cars sold in certain states with a block heater and for those states it's a no charge option. I'd be surprised that they don't provide an EBH as a no cost option in Canada, especially if you're in Manitoba or Alberta where it gets so cold.

Hmmm. I am from Montreal. I have no chance to find an Energi on stock in Quebec... And I understood that it is verrrry hard to get one, even on order. So no way to take a look to the sticker. I do my best now to see how can I order an 2014 Energi. On the web site (canadian) is no info on 2014 Energi (not available). The dealer has it in it's system. I wanted to order it, but on 3013 model on the web I can choose the Deep blue color, but not in the dealer order. It is messed up. I contacted Ford.ca and for instance they only told me that I have to contact the dealer (who sent me to Ford.ca...) So ping-pong.

The Employee pricing discount will end on sep 30. I will see if I can order it before this date...
