battery disconnect fix

Recommended Posts

would someone post exactly how to do the battery disconnect thing that has improved mileage for some after the update?.. I'm going to show it to my service manager today. thank you for your help.I tried searching and too many topics came up. I think it would be beneficial to have it in it's own thread for easy look up.

Turn the car off.

Fold down the rear seat backs, open the access panel, and pull the HVB disconnect.

Disconnect the negative terminal of the 12 volt battery.

Do NOT close the car doors or the trunk.

Wait long enough for all stored charge in the car to drain away, (5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes???)

Reconnect the negative terminal of the 12 volt battery.

Reconnect the HVB.

Does this actually serve to increase MPG, what does it do...????

It causes the computers to forget everything that has been learned about the car and start over with the default values.

This includes all of the tuning parameters for the ICE.

how does that cause an increase in gas mileage?.. I'm just curious, because whether I understand the how's and whys of it or not, I'm going to try it. Anything to get better than 32mpgs.

The computers gather and store information from sensors in various places in the car, particularly the engine fuel and engine control (Hybrid) systems. Those "learned" values are what causes the computer to make the decisions it does on how to control everything. When you do a "hard reset" by removing power, the computer then pulls default values stored in a non volatile table (been doing this since the seventies) and then starts to relearn everything. Many here have found the relearning process to be beneficial to efficiency....

I asked the service manager to do this while my car is there for service and MFT update. he said they could do a memory reset by pushing a button on the computer, and that it accomplished the same thing. is that true or is he bs ing me,?

actually. that is what he called it... keep alive memory, said it's done through computer. I was just wondering what y'all thought.

I would think that a command from the external management laptop would be the way to have the cars computer zero its tables. You can't unplug the "keep alive memory" but you can tell the computer it's time to do a reset to defaults.

With so many different computers and tasks in the car, trying to discuss which memory areas are zeroed, reset, returned to default, etc. etc. is likely a task in futility. Suffice it to say I see encouraging results from the hard reset which were not evident from having the ECM update installed and driving 3000 miles.

I did, and at the risk of sounding ignorant, I have no clue what I'm looking for.

From the manual..

Open the driver's side passenger door, fold down the seat. You will see a small panel

Turn the knob and open the door.

Once you do that, you will see this..

The orange handle is the battery disconnect. Remove using the manual instructions.

As for the 12 VDC battery. Open the trunk, and on the left side you will see a door with 2 knobs. Open the door and remove the connector on the NEGATIVE battery post. I can post a picture of it if you would like. I can mark the picture with arrows, or circles of what needs to be removed. Just let me know.

thanks to those who tried to help. I'll need pictures of what to disconnect on the 12 volt. I've never even used jumper cables to jump a car. I guess I've lived a sheltered life.... lol

Ok, here you go.

This is a shot of the battery door on the left side of the trunk.

This is a shot of the battery. The negative terminal is on the left. You will need to loosen the nut (pardon the word screw in the text box, it is the nut you will need to loosen) and then pull the terminal off the battery.

I would remove the HVB disconnect first, the remove the negative battery terminal. But that's just me.

Don't worry about your mechanical abilities. I know a few medical professionals that don't know which end of a screw drivers to hold! That's why we're here to help!
