Yeah, 47 MPG would be great, but . . .

. . . I went from a 2006 Five Hundred that got about 19 MPG combined over the 7 years I owned the car, which is right in line with what's out there on fueleconomy.gov (LOL, and that was the "hybrid" in the house because my wife drives a Tahoe). I've never believed that I would get anywhere close to the MPG on the window sticker of a car, so I factored 40 MPG into my math about the savings I would generate to partially offset the fact that I was picking up a car payment again after 4 years. So the 42.2 MPG that I'm getting now is far more than I expected, and it's simply awesome to me. I have a spreadsheet set up to help me track the gas savings I'm getting vs. driving the Five Hundred the same distance, and it's already up to $139 on just the 3 fill-ups I've had to date. It's early so far, but I'm on pace to average $170 per month in savings vs. the Five Hundred (or something with similar MPG), which is almost 30% of my payment!! I am keeping track of what the savings would be if I was getting 47 MPG, and it's another $15 over the three tanks, so that will add up over time, but a some point I gotta just be thrilled with where I am and look forward to getting better over time.

(Disclaimer: if you aren't happy with your MPG, then please don't be offended at this post. I'm certainly not downplaying anyone else's experience here, just sharing my own :happy feet: )

Glad you're seeing such great savings! With only 3 fill ups so far it sounds like you're still fairly new to the FFH. Give it time and you'll see your MPGs go up as the car breaks in and as you slowly improve your hybrid driving skills.

We traded a 2005 Ford Five Hundred with similar fuel usage for our 2013 FFH. Like you, we figured we'd be pleased at 40mpg. The 2013 FFH so far has happily exceeded that expectation. Welcome to the forum and hope to see future comments about your FFH experiences.

Wow, and I thought >I< was the only one who liked the Five Hundred. Huge trunk, tons of space for the back-seaters and overall a very nice car but can't hold a MPG candle to my 2013 Fusion Titanium Hybrid. Thought I would miss the 500 but am proud to say I like my FFH (Ford Fusion Hybrid or Ford Five Hundred? LOL) better.

The 500 really grew on me. Lots of room and very reliable. The only problems we had were rear brake rotors at 23,000 miles (Ford later re-paid the cost) and a motor mount we replaced at 70,000 miles. Too bad it got a reputation as a "geezer-mobile". IMO the FFH is more comfortable on long drives and gets waaay better gas mileage.

It's funny how much I really loved the Five Hundred as well. It was a company car that I bought when it was time to turn it in, so I got it for $9,000 in 2009 when it only had 53,000 miles on it, and I sold it I actually sold it to my parents for $5,000 (117k on it, still runs like a champ), so really did get my money's worth out of the car. But the net cost of the Fusion after the sale, plus the projected gas savings made this a no-brainer for me.
