Noise Question - Lincoln 2013 Hybrid

Recommended Posts

I posted this on the Lincoln forum, but got no responses other than the suggestion to post it here.

When I reach 50+ (more often 60+), I hear a noise coming from the engine compartment to the right passenger side.

It is hard to describe. Kind of humming almost a vibration. Is this the generator? Is this normal?

It is happening most of the time, but not always.

So far, this is the only thing that I don't like about the car. Otherwise, I love it.

Nice that they send you over here. I haven't noticed a noice like this but could it be that the noice canceling is playing tricks with you. Maybe it's recording a wrong frequency and playing something strange back.

On the other hand it could just be related to ICE running which makes some odd noices depending on the load. The sound dampening is different between the FFH and MKZ which sound make the MKZ even quiter.

SteveB_TX is another MKZ driver around this forum maybe he can provide some specific MKZ feedback.

To begin to help you we need a little more info.

Have you looked under the hood to make sure everything seems normal and nothing appears loose.

The ICE is on the right side of the engine bay (passenger side) and it's pretty noisy at some rpm settings.

Are those the only speeds when this sound occurs - basically over 50mph?

Are you accelerating or at a static cruising speed?

When going downhill, coasting, or let off the gas pedal does this still happen?

GaryK4, you don't state what motor you have but, my MKZ is a hybrid and I'm not experiencing such a noise.

I will look for loose ICE unit.

The noise happens only over 50 MPH, more typically 60.

Accelerating or static cruising does not make a difference.

Also downhill, coasting, etc does not make a difference.

It happens about 60% - 70% of the time.

I originally mentioned it to the sales guy and he said it goes away after about 5000 miles after the car learns my habits. This sounded like BS to me.

I don't think the 2013 Hybrid has a choice of motors. I believe it is a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle I-4 gas engine according to the web page.

It sounds like something is carrying a resonance frequency into the cabin.

I might sound crazy but have you checked your tires?

I actually had this happen before where I had a foreign object in my tire making an odd noise within a specific speed range. It wasn't large enough to puncture all the way thru in order to get flat.

I'm not sure but it might be worth a look.

Welcome fellow Z'er! I have not experienced this in my hybrid, and 70% of my daily commute is driven between 60 and 75 mph. Also, I am not 100% sure what sound you could be talking about. I wonder if there is a way you could record and post the sound so we could better understand the problem.

Nice that they send you over here <snip>

I am surprised they did. As I mentioned in my intro post, the two Lincoln forums I am a member of are dead, dead, dead. Just a bunch of old folks I guess that don't know how to post. ;)

I will try to record the sound. I will have to turn off the radio, not everyone likes the 60's channel :)

I am an old techie, so I do a lot of forum stuff.

Amazing what a sales guy or service guy will tell you. They need to educate themselves on their vehicles!!

It's true the other MKZ forums are dead. To the OP, I've haven't heard any noise either.

I asked as your first post didn't include what engine and your signature didn't have what engine....so I was guessing as to whether or not you have a hybrid. Sorry I wasn't able to help you.

I agree with corncobs. You should check out your front passenger tire. This is around the speed where an out of balance tire will resonate and cause vibration. You can't feel it in the wheel like we could in the non "fly by wire" steering cars of old. You might try switching the tire location either front to back or right to left and see if the noise follows. That would be an easy test and since it doesn't always do it, this would be a good test over time.
