dalesky Report post Posted June 12, 2013 (edited) When you click on the forum tab, and get an Ad for another car manufacturer. I see Toyota frequently. Just seems odd that a Ford forum would have ads from any car mfgr. Admins, mods, any ideas about this? Edited June 12, 2013 by dalesky
kuzzi Report post Posted June 12, 2013 I get ads for stuff I google. Personally oriented ads. Things like fathers day gifts right now pop up because that's what I've been googling. Thinking about switching brands already? Haha
djminfll Report post Posted June 12, 2013 I don't think that's true, Kuzzi, b/c I get the same pop-ups for Toyota and Kia, and I have not googled either of them since late 2012 when I placed the order for my Fusion. And none of the other topics are popping up with ads.
rico567 Report post Posted June 12, 2013 Ad space is sold on internet sites, just like in newspapers and magazines. Whoever pays, displays. What is startling sometimes is that sites you have visited or ordered from will "find you" at other sites and display ads, i.e., I buy from Amazon and am subsequently at an unrelated site, and an Amazon ad specifically detailing the item I just looked at appears. Now here, one would certainly expect car-related ads, but I've gotten FFH ads on my Facebook page. 1 hybridbear reacted to this

The past couple of days I've been looking for freezer chests online and I get ads for them now when I come to this site and others

hybridbear Report post Posted June 12, 2013 I believe the ads are targeted based on the cookies in your browser. If you have your browser set to delete all cookies or to not allow any to be stored on your computer then you will get default ads. Since this is a car themed forum I'd guess that other car ads might be the default. I just recently printed coupons online for Target and now I'm seeing Target ads on every forum page. 1 jeff_h reacted to this

tr7driver Report post Posted June 12, 2013 When you visit a web site it places a small file in your browser called a cookie. The major ad services read the cookie and use it to determine the ads you see.

neod192 Report post Posted June 12, 2013 Awesome, since I use Chrome for the forums. Firefox has a similar feature too and you can download extensions there too :) Evey once in a while you'll find out that a website won't load because it's blocked (like when you link to something on slickdeals because it re-routes through the ad servers). mokee Report post Posted June 12, 2013 I don't get ads unless I allow scripts to run on my WinX machines. There are sites that tell me to allow Java scripts to see a page, so I select which scripts to temporarily or permanently run from a list. If temporarily the scripts go away when the browser closes. It takes experimenting and patience to use the browser add-on so it's not for everybody, but since using it I've have fewer problems with the puters. Tablets and phones present a challenge for different solutions depending on operating system.
dalesky Report post Posted June 13, 2013 I agree about the Chrome addon, AdBlock. works great. It is not unusual to be tracked on the 'net. It's been going on a long time, and will only get more pervasive without our invervention. I understand the issue, and have become a big fan of Chrome Browser. I also like the incognito window, which is not exclusive to them, but is great for hiding your browsing from others who may use your PC. Works on the iPad also by the way. GrySql Report post Posted June 13, 2013 On my Mac I use Firefox. I use their available security extensions to eliminate most tracking and pop-up Ads.One particular extension called "DoNotTrackMe" has blocked over 150,000 tracking attempts in the last year, they show you who, what, where and how many.AdBlock is also good, Better Privacy dumps the Super-Cookies (LSO's) and I have a couple more little soldiers hard at work. If you look near the bottom of this FFH Forum page at the area that says "Users on Line" you may notice that Bing, Google and many other data mining web-bots are frequently here. And yes, my tin hat fits perfectly.
elle Report post Posted June 13, 2013 (edited) Yup. Ads will display according to your own browsing history. I did some research for a friend on adult diapers and I swear ads for adult diapers followed me around for months, even here. It's not site specific; it's how the ad placement programs work. Just be aware that there are times when you will want to have the cookies on.I don't worry too much about normal Cookies, it's the flash-based LSO (Local Shared Objects), aka Super Cookie, that is the problem.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Shared_Objecthttp://www.fightidentitytheft.com/blog/new-breed-super-cookie-defies-removal-almost BTW, this Forum has at least 6 Trackers in use right now, two social networks and four tracking companies.
