He was accelerating slowly. Just wanted to post for input.

rjent Report post Posted June 9, 2013 That does NOT look right to me. For one thing, at 63 MPH the battery is kept at about 80 percent with the ICE continuously running and the EV "helping". When the system drains the battery like your video does, it takes a lot of energy to recharge the battery and is why your instant mileage is at 20 for so much of the time. Did your BF have the cruise set or is he driving with his right foot?
hybridbear Report post Posted June 9, 2013 One issue is the constant variation of the throttle. As has been discussed before, maintaining steady throttle pressure is a key to getting good gas mileage. In the video it was apparent that the driver was constantly on and off the throttle. That will hurt your gas mileage by varying the workload of the ICE and other drivetrain efficiency losses. This also illustrates why it is really bad for your MPGs to take the highway for short trips. If you haven't already, read this thread that explains why that is bad for MPGs and it will help you understand.
clummus Report post Posted June 9, 2013 he was applying slow pressure to gradually get up to speed and then put cruise on if I remember correctly. I'm.going to continue to try to capture different clips for a few days and hopefully can get some input from y'all.before going back.to.the dealer. clummus Report post Posted June 9, 2013 it was a four hour trip.
corncobs Report post Posted June 9, 2013 You might hate me for saying this but IMO the car operates correctly. First you accelerated to 62 MPH so no way to do that for EV mode; once you kept the car in steady speed it did stay in EV mode at 62 for quite a while. Then with the HVB depleted the ICE kicks back in the recharge the battery. Now if you would try the same thing on a road with a speed limit 40 - 45 MPH you should be able to see the EV mode lasting at lot longer than at 62 MPH. If you are traveling interstate it's better to keep it above 63 MPH so that the EV doesn't kick in and the SOC stays high which should result in an instant MPG display of 40+ MPG depending on the road level; @ level street up 50 MPG instant. 1 gadgetguy reacted to this
clummus Report post Posted June 9, 2013 No, I don't hate you for saying that, I really. want my car to operate correctly. I plan to try to get a few more clips and hopefully I'll learn that the car is fine and I can stop worrying.
neod192 Report post Posted June 12, 2013 At 2:05 you can see the car going in and out of EV as your boyfriend applies pressure to the gas pedal. He has to stop doing that and just keep the pressure constant. The gas pedal is REALLY sensitive and it took me 2 months to be able to apply just enough pressure to increase the demand AND keep it in EV. Think of it as having an egg between your foot and the pedal :) Now I can actually release the gas pedal and have the car switch from ICE to EV mode without completely letting go of the pedal. I thought it couldn't be done when I first got the car, but I figured it out with time :) 1 corncobs reacted to this
clummus Report post Posted June 12, 2013 https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200137997827841&l=4848137301472549604okay here is another one of me driving yesterday. I really do appreciate the tips and info. It really does help me to not feel so alone with this. None of my friends really care much about gas mileage, and they don't see why I'm too concerned that I'm not getting what I should yet.

hybridbear Report post Posted June 13, 2013 I know what you mean about your friends not caring about gas mileage lol A couple questions about the video: do you have the A/C on? I see it's over 90 degrees outside so I'm guessing you do. Have you used the MyView screen to display how much electricity the A/C is drawing? It really takes a lot of juice to first cool down the car. On short drives you'll see a big A/C penalty. I've seen it drop my mileage from 55 MPG to 40 MPG on short trips around the city. Using Eco Cruise will help, even around the city I use it. Since you have adaptive cruise you have it even better than we do since we didn't buy that package. Your acceleration rate looked good for a high score on the coaching screen, but one comment is to try to be as steady as possible with the pedal pressure. And don't try to force the car into EV until you reach your cruising speed. Unless you're only accelerating up to 25 MPH or less it's better to use the ICE to accelerate. On common tip is to accelerate with the ICE up to 2 or 3 MPH faster than your desired cruising speed, then you gently let off the accelerator (but do not fully release the pedal) until the ICE turns off. Then you can engage Eco Cruise to maintain your speed or gently apply pressure to the accelerator to maintain your speed without starting the ICE again. Braking is a big part. In the thread where I explained about the efficiency of hybrids and electrification and the losses in the system you can see just how much energy is lost by having a low brake score. That is why I focus so much on getting 100% whenever possible and after 10,500 miles our Lifetime Brake Score is 99%. It hasn't been easy to do that and has taken me awhile to learn but now I have it down pretty well and I know that this contributes to my high gas mileage on city trips. Another killer for MPG is lots of stopping and accelerating, especially up to high speeds. Since only about half of the energy that came out of the battery to power the car goes back in when you get a 100% brake score everytime you have to stop you're losing 1/4 of your kinetic energy (which is about half of the energy that was used to accelerate you whether it came from gas or from the battery). If you get a 50% brake score you've only recovered 25% of the original energy. Even 25% is still better than a car without regen braking, but it is A LOT less than if you get a 100% brake score. The best thing to do is to just keep driving and learning the car. Over time you can learn how to feel in the brake pedal when you've lost a 100% brake score and engaged the brake pads before it was necessary. You'll also be able to feel in the pedal when the car will kick into EV mode and when it's better to keep the ICE running. If you haven't yet, read this thread about hybrid efficiency because it will explain a lot to help you understand how the car works which will improve your MPGshttp://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/6606-why-hybrids-are-so-efficient/ 2 acdii and srogers reacted to this
keithsm2 Report post Posted June 13, 2013 i watched a little bit of your first posted clip.... and someone may have noted this earlier...but ill say it again...... once you are at cruising speed. you need to be gentle with the throttle to stay in EV. If you are off and on it....and hitting it "hard" it will think you are going to accelerate and kick in the ICE. so.. like everyone has said.....Easy on the throttle... if you ease into the throttle you can see the EV line go up as you accelerate or cruising....until you reach its max potential.... ( ice is probably best for accelerating, unless close to home in a neighborhood. ) 1 hybridbear reacted to this
