Day two with my 2013 HyTi

Tuesday morning I took delivery of my Titanium Hybrid -- oxford white (which has garnered a lot of compliments in the 2 days I've owned it) with driver assist, parking assist, and adaptive cruise control.

 

No nav because I have 4 different navigation apps on my iPhone and don't really need another one, and no sunroof because it dropped the headliner low enough that the roof literally touched my head when I'm in a comfortable driving position. Too bad, as I would have liked the sunroof.

 

I've put 120 miles on the car in two days because I've got commute that's 26 miles each way every day. Gas mileage on the first tank is only in the mid-30's so far but I'm not concerned about it because the car is brand new (dealer says they're not fully broken for between 1000 and 3000 miles), and all my driving is highway driving at 70+ mph, which is hard on hybrids because the ICE is running almost all the time. Not too many pure EV miles on weekdays. Running around town on weekends should drive the average mileage up.

 

I'm loving lane keeping and active cruise control on the long highway drives. It's a little weird to have your car speed up and slow down to maintain safe distance, but once you get used to it, it's wicked cool, as they say around here.

 

Overall, a great purchase, especially at X-plan pricing plus $500 consumer cash plus the $750 private cash certificate (which my dealer got Ford to honor even though it expired while I was waiting for them to build the car).

 

The next decision I have to make is whether to replace the buggy-whip antenna with a 3rd party shark fin for a more polished look.

Well, I waited long enough for it. Ordered December 29, 2012 -- built April 2, 2013 -- arrived in Massachusetts April 19 -- prepped and delivered April 23. Four months from order to delivery. But I wanted the car I wanted, in the color I wanted, with the options I wanted.

I'm on Day 7 and just finishing first tank of gas.

 

Seem to be able to get 40+ MPG on my HyTi early on the day but notice that on the way home in PM the A/C really makes a negative impact (I'm in Florida) and it takes several minutes of driving on gas for the batteries to charge enough to give me both cool air and EV.

 

Sound right veteran owners?

Yup, sounds accurate. When it was cold I would get about 43-47 or so MPG on my morning commute (when it was 30 degrees) and 50-54 or so MPG on the afternoon commute (when it was 50 degrees or more). A couple weeks ago we had a few days of 90+ weather and it flip-flopped to roughly the opposite numbers since the optimal temps were in the morning instead of afternoon.

heheh 30* being cold, I LOL! 30* was a warm day for me. :) Shoot it still in the 30's in the morning here.

Sorry I didn't caveat that as I have already done multiple times... the term 'cold' is relative. You make fun of me saying 30 is cold, so I can then say the same about someone in FL saying 50 is 'cold', etc etc.

I am not finding the A/C to have very much of an effect. i am in Florida at this time. Every time you start the car, the A/C turns the recirculate off. I always make sure it's on. I believe that is much more efficient in hot weather.

Congratulations on finally getting your car. I'm still waiting on my Oxford White FFH Titanium which is almost identical to yours except I have the moon roof option and don't have the parking assist option. I hope I like the color as I actually haven't seen it in person yet. I do have a question for you regarding your comment about not ordering the moon roof because your head hit the roof with it. How tall are you? I'm 6'4" and had that worry but when I drove a SE hybrid on the dealers lot with a moon roof, my head didn't hit. That was the reason that I went ahead and ordered a 2013 with the moon roof. A couple of years ago, I was looking at the previous model FFH and I did notice my head hit the roof on that moon roof equipped car. But, I thought they improved the head room clearance on the 2013 model since my head didn't hit on the one that I took the test drive on. Now, I'm a little concerned about that after reading your comment. Hopefully you are 6'5" or more and that is the reason for the difference.

Yes, I'm 6'5" and have reached that age where my back prefers a somewhat taller seating position vs. being right down on the floorboards. Between those two things, the headliner with moon roof is about 1/8 inch over my head. If I were willing to move the seat down as low as possible I could have made it work, but that's not a comfortable driving position to me.

 

I do have a question for you regarding your comment about not ordering the moon roof because your head hit the roof with it. How tall are you? I'm 6'4" and had that worry but when I drove a SE hybrid on the dealers lot with a moon roof, my head didn't hit. That was the reason that I went ahead and ordered a 2013 with the moon roof. Thanks for the info. I picked up my new FFH yesterday afternoon and noticed that with the seat in the full down position my hair just barely brushes the moonroof headliner/housing. I adjusted the seat about 7/8 of the way to the fully rear position to be comfortable for me and noticed that the left armrest is a little short to be comfortable to rest my arm on it. Have you noticed that too?

We just picked up Our new Ruby Red FFH Titanium. My Wife's commute is nearly three times as far as mine, so she is driving it to work. We have never driven Hybrids before. Love the new Car by the way, silky smooth, quite, and beautiful. A director of the company who drives an Audi was enamored with the car. Anyway my Drive home from the dealer I got 37.7mpg. I thought this was pretty good considering it is not broken in, and EV plus hasn't learned locations, I also wasn't driving like a grampa, but I thought I've read enough on this forum to have picked up some hybrid driving tricks. I though for sure I would have better MPG then my wife, because of our driving stiles. Well her commute home she got 43.5mpg. She didn't know what her mpgs were on the way in, and I didn't know how to look, but I looked at her trip on the way home and was floored both because 43.5 was great and because she beat me :(

Congrats, and remember my favorite saying for a hybrid "drive smarter, not harder" I am driving my wife nuts (not that far to go) when she drives... Start slower, take your foot off the gas sooner when a red light is coming up, etc... Luckily, she is tolerant!
