Regenerative Braking System & Coasting

Recommended Posts

Interesting. Pretty much anytime I let off the accelerator completely I'm seeing an up arrow.

Same here... Pedal up = regen on.

In order to see the battery icon charging during regen, you need to enable it on your dashboard by going to settings/ battery or something like that. I just bought the car two days ago

Coming home from work today, I noticed there is an up arrow when coasting. My bad.

LOL, I looked at mine and what do you know ... The arrow up in there when I lift my foot off the gas pedal. It also seems to be coasting more now. I did some tests on the highway on the rented Fiesta and my Fusion and they both take just about as long to slow down.

It's takes about 5 seconds go to from 65 mph to 60 or from 70 to 65. About 10 seconds from 70 to 60.

That's is the same kinda rate I have seen on mine. About 5 sec from 65 to 60 I have a feeling it takes longer at lower speeds but I need to confirm. I did capture a run at 45 mph in video but its not consistent enough to get good data from it.

I had the cruise control set and a timer on my phone. I deactivated CC and started the timer at the same time and watched the timer and speed as it slowed down. Pretty easy to do as long as there's light / no traffic and you can afford to be distracted for 5-10 seconds :)

By default the up and down arrows only show in the Empower display mode, but I think they can be turned on in other modes. The car is charging when you let off the gas, which is why the short coast distance. Flipping the car in neutral will stop this charging, as well as stop the regenerative braking, but I don't really recommend flipping back and forth to neutral frequently..

I find that the cruise control works when coasting too, even activating the "recharge" swirling icon. But even without cruise engaged, there is some regen - and some drag - when coasting. I haven't noticed whether the up arrow is on when coasting with the soc at maximum. Will be checking that.

BTW, I don't have Fuelly mpg, but I keep my own spreadsheet. 42.4 mpg since new; 44.6 mpg since 4000 miles (Ford says don't worry about mpg before 4K), 30 fillups. The instrumentation shows 43.4 mpg lifetime.
