neod192 Report post Posted March 28, 2013 So since my car will be here soon (yay!) I figured I would find out how much I will have to pay for insurance. I quoted both a Gas and Hybrid Fusion and was a little surprised to see that the Hybrid costs more ($82 more in my case)! I know there's the whole hybrid part that's expensive, but hybrid drivers tend to be safer, slower drivers. I would think that would count and make the Hybrid premium similar to the gas premium. I know insurance is different from state to state and I'm "lucky" to live in a state with no-fault laws so we pay more anyway ... but I'm hoping I can get some insight on this. PS. I use Progressive and have no intentions to switch to another company :) Thanks! 1 hybridbear reacted to this
keybman Report post Posted March 28, 2013 I am not an expert in how insurance companies determine premiums, but I have a first guess. I assume that the cost differences have to do with the valuation of risk. If you have a total loss of the vehicle, your Hybrid would cost $5300 more to replace ($27.2K vs $21.9K), or about 24% more. If this factor is involved in the risk determination, and based upon your $82 figure, I calculated that you got quotes for $342 for Gas, and $424 for Hybrid. Do these figures come close to your quotes? Same principle would apply if you bought a $50,000 car - I would expect a higher premium. Hope this helps. 1 jeff_h reacted to this
neod192 Report post Posted March 28, 2013 That makes sense .. I guess :) The online quotes were $411 and $493. I then called my agent and after I gave them my VIN, their quote was $411. The car is so new that the agent had to call Progressive to get the actual $ amount. The VIN would pull up the car, but not a $ amount :)
acdii Report post Posted March 28, 2013 One factor to consider also is the size of the vehicle. I was surprised that the Fusion was more than the F150 considering the F150 was $20K more. It was due to the fact the F150 is less likely to be heavily damaged in a crash than the Fusion will. So cost of the vehicle isnt really that great a factor, but the vehicle type is. I switched from 21st to Gieco and saved $400 on my 2 cars. 21st jacked all their rates up this year and nearly doubled what I was paying. Had nothing to do with my driving record, considering its been clean for the past decades, but more to the fact it is costing more in IL to insure cars due to other people crashing. At least that is what I was told when I called regarding the rates. The 13 Fusion is $247 for 6 months.
lmp180psu Report post Posted March 28, 2013 I have Geico and the quotes for the Gas and hybrid Fusion were virtually the same for 6 months.
okaydave Report post Posted March 28, 2013 I work for a state insurance regulator, so I know a little about insurance. :) The liability portion (bodily injury and property damage)of your rate should be the same no matter what vehicle you drive. It may may be a few dollars different base on safety features (anti lock brakes, airbags, etc.). The difference comes in for the collision and comprehensive cost. The higher the price vehicle, generally the higher the cost of the physical damage portion of your insurance. Other factors come into play such as repairability and so forth. hybridbear Report post Posted April 1, 2013 Every insurance company calculates differently as well. Different insurance companies favor different groups of people. We found that our Fusion only amounted to a minimal increase in cost compared to our 2006 Honda Accord Hybrid. And our insurance for the brand new Fusion is less than it was for a 2003 Saab 9-5 Aero
shaggy314 Report post Posted April 3, 2013 AAA in California has a hybrid discount. I've not checked yet for Texas. You do have to be a member to get their rates, I happen to have car and home from them at the moment. 1 mokee reacted to this
JSKershaw Report post Posted April 4, 2013 Here in Canada the Fusion being newer and more expensive now costs me $40 less per month over my traded in 2005 Mazda3. It's a head scratcher, but a nice surprise!!!
acdii Report post Posted April 4, 2013 The Fusion is larger than the 3, and that right there accounts for the lower rate. Compare a pickup to the 3 and it will be even lower.

acdii Report post Posted April 4, 2013 Dang, thats about what I pay a year on it!
aaronj1159 Report post Posted April 4, 2013 Yeah, being in the "young and male" category boosts my number up pretty good. I also have one claim on my history involving a pesky light pole in a parking lot from 2 years ago that I still pay for when the insurance bill comes. They quoted an excellent rate on the FFH and Ford SCREW short bed. Together they're $66 more than what I pay State Farm for the FFH. It's like insuring the pickup for nothin'. I said, "What the... is going on?" The reply indicated their rates are figured differently than State Farm. Anyone have a bad experience with AAA? aaronj1159 Report post Posted April 4, 2013 If anyone would share their experiences with their insurance companies (particularly if you're in Virginia), I'd appreciate it. I have State Farm and, aside from the cost, they've done pretty well for me. My age and a prior minor accident definitely raise my premium anywhere I go, but I've got some friends with other companies paying a lot less. So I think I'll shop around a little before my next renewal.
acdii Report post Posted April 4, 2013 21st century(Farmers) is a good company, they however raised the rates in IL, so I switched to Gieco. State Farm, Allstate, are always high, I got a quote that was DOUBLE what I had with 21st.
fusionTX Report post Posted April 4, 2013 I have been with AMICA for many years. I like the fact that the insurance term is a year, instead of the six months most companies do these days.Plus they pay you dividends every year (a few hundred dollars in may case).
