Fuelly - What is that?

I see many of you have Fuelly MPG in your signatures.

 

How are you using it and is it accurate? Any big advantages?

 

I'm about to order / purchase a Fusion TI so maybe I should get on board :)

Exactly -- the input is based on the user's odometer reading and gallons, bascially the same as a spreadsheet that I've maintained for years, printed out copy is kept in the glove box to note the odometer, gallons, and price per gallon... then get home and key that into excel spreadsheet and now also take an extra 30 seconds and input those three elements into fuelly too.

Sounds good, but in your signature I see stats. Do you put that in manually, or is that linked into Fuelly somehow?

It's nice in that there are a HUGE number of cars on it so you can see what others are getting. I basically rule the 1990's for my car. Nobody has anywhere near the number of tanks, etc.

I've been filtering on the hybrids, have noticed that the bell curve seems to have moved right about 2 MPG from a month ago... I think that will continue until the hot summer comes and then stop or maybe retreat a bit.

Well, as weather gets up to mid 70's and 80's here in Texas, seeing more of a 8-12 more mpg increase, in cool weather the ICE has to run get EV warm for it to function effectively. Warm weather already there... love it...

I intend on using Fuelly as well, but not until I have at least 1000 miles on my HyTi. I don't want to drag the average down while I am in the break in period (for both my driving habits an the Fusion) I expect my first few tanks to be lower than average MPG.

Good point. If my mileage improves after 1k miles or so I can remove my first few fill-ups. If anyone wants to look at my comments they'll see that I only filled up once so far :)

I included all of our fill ups from the start. If you look at our Fuelly detail you can see that our first few tanks were significantly lower than later tanks in very similar weather conditions. We saw a 3-4 MPG bump after about 1500 ICE miles (around 3000 on the odometer). I include all of them because that's how I track the accuracy of the Lifetime Summary on the car. So far the car and Fuelly are an exact match.

My first fill-up today yielded 43 MPG. Very happy with that. I know it won't last because tomorrow we drive 1100 miles straight thru, with three small dogs, and by the end of the drive, you are really on fumes. So we have to go 75 to 80, otherwise it would take longer than the 18 to 19 hours it normally takes. So I know my average will go way down. It's expected, but probably not fair to log it.

On top of that, the temperature tomorrow morning will be in the forties, with rain and wind. Not a good combination. Car is pretty well loaded too.

 

Once I get back from Florida, I may start the fuelly thing.

Now that my vacation is over and my commute will be mainly coming and going from work, I have signed up for fuelly.

My car has spent more time on the road and in Florida than it has at home.

I left for Florida 8 days after getting the car, so I have never used a full tank of gas at home.

Looking forward to seeing how the car will do over time on its normal daily routine.

My current mileage is a little less 3,300.

If so, what do you consider city?

 

For instance I have a 12 mile commute to work if I take the highways. A few miles on I-10 (speed limit 60), and even fewer miles on a toll road (speed limit 65). I stay at or below 62 on these roads since I got the Fusion. It really makes little difference in time.

 

I would consider this city driving. To me highway driving involves a road trip, leaving the city.

 

Does this sound right?

I would go with the EPA driving style and consider anything over 55 Highway. City driving means stop and go, speeds up to 45. The 45-55 range is kind of in-between, so I would classify that as city too.

I find it kind of daunting to even make an effort to determine city vs. highway. If your whole tank is used on a daily commute, then it would be simple to calculate it and enter it. Throw in runs to the store, etc., and for me, it becomes a bit too much of a burden for me to try and make sense of it.

 

For my purposes with this car, it really doesn't matter. My goal is exceed EPA, and since the numbers match, it really makes no difference to me.

 

Previously, my goal in my '11 was to exceed city EPA (41) on every tank, and that was because I learned it was easy to do.

I disabled the city vs. highway on my Fuelly account for these reasons.

 

Of course everyone has their opinion and level of commitment :) And for those of you keeping very detailed records, I applaud you! :worship:

I only use Fuelly to track my overall mileage. Would be way too much work to try and figure out what is city and what is highway, at least for me. It always depends on my day as to where I go as I support several locations for my job.

 

And as already stated for a hybrid, Ford came up with the same numbers so probably doesn't make a difference.
